Federally sponsored research has led to major advances in cell productivity that improve prospects for the use of biotechnology to produce chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Conventional fermentation technology is limited by the inability of microorganisms to use all the oxygen available in a bioreactor. Fundamental knowledge obtained by a university researcher offers the promise of understanding oxygen-limiting conditions in aerobic fermentations. This is a central issue to the effective use of this technology in commercial bioreactors.
