World AIDS Day 2007: The Power of Partnerships


14 New Partners Initiative Grants Announced in the Fight Against HIV/AIDS

The New Partners Initiative (NPI) announced by President George W. Bush in 2005 on World AIDS Day, is part of a broader effort within the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (Emergency Plan/PEPFAR) to work with new partners, including community and faith-based organizations, enhancing their technical and organizational capacity and ensuring the quality and sustainability of HIV/AIDS programs by building community ownership. The following organizations have been selected as round two awardees under the NPI:

American Refugee Committee International (ARC)

  • American Refugee Committee International will work to improve access to basic HIV/AIDS prevention, care for people living with HIV/ AIDS, and counseling and testing services at the community level in three underserved districts in northern Uganda.

Baptist AIDS Response Agency (BARA)

  • Baptist AIDS Response Agency, an indigenous organization working in Kenya, will support local faith-based organizations to expand counseling and testing, prevention, and care for orphans and vulnerable children. This organization is a PEPFAR sub-partner that has graduated to prime partner.

CAMFED USA Foundation

  • CAMFED is a non-governmental organization dedicated to girls’ education and poverty eradication in Africa. In Tanzania, CAMFED plans to collaborate with the Ministry of Education and district and local organizations to build capacity and economic empowerment targeting orphans and vulnerable children in and around schools in rural districts.

Children’s Emergency Relief International (CERI)

  • Children’s Emergency Relief International will partner with an indigenous organization in South Africa to provide “memory work training” to indigenous non-governmental organizations working with orphans and vulnerable children in underserved areas.

Comprehensive HIV AIDS Management Programme (CHAMP)

  • Comprehensive HIV AIDS Management Programme, an indigenous organization working in Zambia, will build capacity of rural and underserved communities to deliver prevention of mother-to-child transmission services, HIV counseling and testing, and HIV prevention activities focusing on abstinence and faithfulness.

Handicap International Rwanda

  • Handicap International will work in Rwandan communities to engage people with disabilities to extend provision of care for people living with HIV/AIDS services.

Integrated Community Based Initiatives (ICOBI)

  • In the underserved Bushenyi and Mbarara District in Uganda, Integrated Community Based Initiatives will work to expand services to orphans and vulnerable children, including those who are heads of a household. This organization is a PEPFAR sub-partner that has graduated to prime partner.

NPI Grant Recipients Continued

Matibabu Foundation Kenya

  • Matibabu Foundation, an indigenous organization working in Kenya, will work with established antiretroviral treatment sites to expand prevention of mother-to-child transmission services, HIV counseling and testing, and prevention services using the ABC approach (Abstain, Be faithful, correct and consistent use of Condoms).

St. Boniface Haiti Foundation

  • In Haiti, St. Boniface Hospital, a faith-based organization located in a community where HIV prevalence is estimated to be over five percent, will work to scale-up HIV/AIDS prevention and care activities to cover people that are not currently being served by a significant health facility. Services will include HIV counseling and testing, care for people living with HIV/AIDS, and care for orphans and vulnerable children, as well as prevention programs using the ABC approach.

Sophumelela Clinic Incorporated (SCI)

  • Sophumelela Clinic Incorporated is an indigenous, faith-based organization that works in South Africa to provide comprehensive clinical, social and spiritual care to HIV-affected people and their families. SCI plans to provide a range of services, including HIV counseling and testing, care for people living with HIV/AIDS, and care for orphans and vulnerable children. This organization is a PEPFAR sub-partner that has graduated to prime partner.

Tearfund

  • Tearfund is a faith-based organization based in the United Kingdom working with a global network of local churches to help eradicate poverty. In Kenya, Tearfund will expand the reach and impact of partners’ HIV counseling and testing and prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission programs.

THETA

  • THETA, an indigenous organization working in Uganda, will scale up its existing efforts by building the capacity of informal community structures and linking them to the formal health and social system. These efforts will increase access to abstinence and faithfulness prevention programs, care for people living with HIV/AIDS, and care for orphans and vulnerable children. This organization is a PEPFAR sub-partner that has graduated to prime partner.

Woord en Daad

  • Woord en Daad, a Dutch faith-based organization, will work through its long-standing South African partner organization, Mfesane, to provide prevention, counseling and testing, and care services to members of communities in two municipalities in South Africa.

World Conference of Religions for Peace (WCRP)

  • World Conference of Religions for Peace will work with and through its affiliated national inter-religious councils and groups and women of faith networks to expand the capacity, scale and sustainability of local faith-based organizations’ responses to HIV/ AIDS in Ethiopia and Tanzania. Activities will focus on prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission, care for people living with HIV/AIDS, and care for orphans and vulnerable children.
