"Dear Colleague" Letter on
April 4, 2000 Public Meeting on
Health Claims in Dietary Supplement Labeling

Dear Colleague, Dietary Supplements Community:

This letter is to alert you that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will be holding a public meeting on April 4, 2000, to solicit input on two topics pertaining to health claims in dietary supplement labeling. One topic concerns implementation of the recent court of appeals decision in Pearson v. Shalala (Pearson). The second topic is whether claims about an effect on an existing disease may be made a health claim, or whether such claims should subject the product to regulation as a drug. We are holding this meeting to give the public an opportunity to provide information and views on these topics. A Federal Register notice detailing the specific issues, logistics, and registration information will be published shortly.

Sincerely yours,

Christine J. Lewis, Ph.D.
Acting Director
