Gasification

NETL's Gasification Technologies Program supports Research & Development (R&D) in the area of gasification — a process for the conversion of carbon-based materials (feedstocks) such as coal into synthesis gas (syngas) that can be used to produce clean electrical energy, transportation fuels, and chemicals efficiently and cost-effectively using domestic fuel resources. The DOE strives to make technology improvements to gasification technologies so gasification can help provide a stable, secure, affordable energy supply to meet the nation's growing energy demands.

Gasification Systems Technologies R&D

The Program Mission is to lead R&D efforts to enhance the performance of gasification systems, thus enabling U.S. industry to improve the competitiveness of gasification-based processes. The gasification program will reduce equipment costs, improve process environmental performance, and increase process reliability and flexibility.

Other Gasification Program Activities include educating the public about gasification and ongoing contacts and discussions
with the public and industry concerning what the future of gasification should be. Although in commercial use for more than 100 years, gasification undergoes a continuing evolution in order to meet today's needs.

Closely Aligned Organizations: Gasification Systems Technologies coordinates and works with other DOE programs, national laboratories, and private organizations to ensure that gasification R&D dovetails well with other R&D efforts, and to ensure efficient technology development with minimum cost to the taxpayer.
