Energy Analyses

Energy Analyses at NETL provide input to decisions on issues such as national plans and programs, resource use, environmental and energy security policies, technology options for research and development programs, and paths to deployment of energy technology. The nature of the problems studied requires an interdisciplinary approach. The focus of analysis efforts is on the future state of technology, markets, and public benefits.

  • Technology analysis evaluates the attributes of energy technologies, examining RD&D areas in terms of potential costs, benefits, risks, uncertainties, and timeframes. Studies are focused on processing of fossil fuels and production of energy, including alternative power generation systems, fuel processing steps, and competing energy technologies,
  • Benefits analysis focuses on quantifying both prospective and retrospective benefits of FE R&D programs using models such as the National Energy Modeling system.
  • Current Situation and Trend analysis assesses the current situation and near- and long-term trends within the energy industry and in the U.S. and world economy that may impact energy production and use and influence the choice of fuels and energy production technologies.
  • Reference Shelf - recently released analyses, related documents and reference materials.
