A native of Ohio, Elizabeth M. Denholm, Ph.D., earned her B.S. and M.S. in biology from the University of Akron in 1975 and 1977, respectively. She taught a variety of undergraduate biology classes at a liberal arts college, and worked as a Research Associate at Johns Hopkins University before returning to graduate school. Denholm received a Ph.D. in experimental pathology from Bowman Gray School of Medicine/ Wake Forest University in 1985. Her work demonstrated the presence of monocyte chemotactic factors in atherosclerotic lesions at a time when this was a new concept. After graduating, Denholm completed two postdoctoral research fellowships, the first in biochemistry at Bowman Gray School Medicine, and the second in pathology at the University of Michigan Medical Center. Following her postdoctoral training, Denholm joined the faculty at Albany Medical College as an Assistant Professor, and received an NIH grant to study the role of monocyte chemotactic factors in pulmonary fibrosis.

Denholm's interest in realizing an application to her work, prompted her to leave academics to pursue a career in drug development. Over a 10 year period, she worked in both large pharmaceutical and small biotech companies in the U.S. and Canada; and proudly holds dual citizenship in both countries. Her research was highly varied in many aspects, including a wide range of diseases and therapeutic areas (atherosclerosis, psoriasis, hypertension, diabetes, cancer), basic discovery research, preclinical pharmacology, and support of clinical trials. Positions held in industry were Senior Research Investigator, Dept Head of Cellular Biology, and Director of Pharmacology and Biology.

In 2004 she joined the NIH as an extramural Program Director in the Division of Lung Diseases at the National Institute of Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, where she managed a large portfolio of grants in pulmonary vascular disease and basic cell biology, as well as small business grants, and clinical trials in pulmonary arterial hypertension and pulmonary embolism. In 2007, Denholm joined NIEHS. She hopes to utilize her past experiences as an academic and pharmaceutical scientist, to assist NIEHS researchers in finding practical applications of their research which will benefit the public.
