Haidong Kan, Ph.D., joined the Epidemiology Branch as a visiting fellow working with Stephanie London, M.D., Dr.P.H., in January 2005. He studies the health effects of traffic-originated air pollution, specifically the association between traffic exposure and lung function and cardiorespiratory diseases in an existing cohort. Kan also studies the short-term health effects of ambient air pollution. Sponsored by the Health Effects Institute Public Health and Air Pollution in Asia (PAPA) program, he and his colleagues are conducting a time-series study to evaluate the association between mortality outcomes—both total and cause-specific— and major air pollutants in Shanghai, China.

Studies

  • The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study (http://www.chaicore.com/aric/index.html) Exit NIEHS
The ARIC Study is a prospective epidemiologic study conducted in four U.S. communities. ARIC is designed to investigate the etiology and natural history of atherosclerosis, the etiology of clinical atherosclerotic diseases and variation in cardiovascular risk factors.
