Samuel H. Wilson, M.D., is Acting Director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and the National Toxicology Program of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). A veteran medical researcher in the field of genetic toxicology, Dr. Wilson has helped to expand the traditional definition of environmental health sciences to encompass areas such as understanding of genetic and environmental interactions in disease etiology and development of more precise measurements of human exposures in population studies. Dr. Wilson leads the efforts of the NIEHS in focusing on genetic susceptibility, functional genomics, children’s health, minority research, and community outreach and engagement in environmental health research. He works with the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academy of Sciences in fostering the IOM Roundtable on Environmental Health, Research, and Medicine. Dr. Wilson joined the NIEHS in 1996 as Deputy Director and chief of the DNA Repair and Nucleic Acid Enzymology (http://www.niehs.nih.gov/research/atniehs/labs/lsb/dnarna/index.cfm) Section in the Intramural Division. Dr. Wilson received his M.D. from Harvard University, and completed his training at the NIH. He is the author of numerous research articles and publications.

Vision for NIEHS/NTP

The vision for the Institute is to improve the health of individuals in the United States and people around the world. Achieving this vision depends on a set of core values that apply to all activities of the Institute:

  • Research excellence (innovation; discovery of new scientific knowledge and technology)
  • Management Excellence; and
  • Community outreach, education, and involvement.

At the NIEHS/NTP, we engage in a special form of public service – producing scientific knowledge that promotes individual and public health. Our institute is uniquely positioned to help prevent disease and transform new scientific knowledge into improvements in human health. There are many opportunities before us to build and expand the contributions of the NIEHS:

  • Foster research on environmental triggers of disease;
  • Communicate advances in environmental health sciences to the public;
  • Foster training and development of emerging young environmental health scientists and practitioners;
  • Enhance translation of knowledge from research to disease prevention; and
  • Foster safety assessment research on chemicals and other environmental factors.

The realization of this vision requires the partnership and effort of everyone in the environmental health sciences communities.
