Headliner Volume 229
March 25, 2008
The March Tax Talk Today webcast discussed “International Tax Issues: Understanding Tax Treaties.”
In today’s global economy, tax professionals and many businesses need to be aware of international tax issues, including those resulting from more than 60 tax treaties negotiated between the U.S. Department of Treasury and other countries.
Moderated by host Les Witmer, the show’s panelists included: Marty Sartipi, Globalization Strategy and Policy Program Manager, Large and Mid Size Business (LMSB) Division, International, Internal Revenue Service; Anthony Johnstone, Tax Treaty Analyst (LMSB), International, Internal Revenue Service; Paula N. Singer, Partner, Vacovec, Mayotte & Singer LLP; and Donald B. Walter, CPA, Principal GlobalTaxHelp.com.
Panelists discussed the IRS’ new service-wide approach to international tax administration; how to claim tax treaty benefits; the purpose, application and interplay between treaties and U.S. tax law; withholding, residency, compliance and Competent Authority issues; and specific tax issues related to athletes and entertainers.
International tax treaties encourage cross-border business transactions, reduced rates of tax and the elimination or reduction of double taxation, but the panelists stressed it is not often easy to understand or interpret the highly technical provisions contained in them. IRS.gov is a good starting point for information.
The entire March 11 webcast is accessible for viewing via archive for 12 months at Tax Talk Today. A transcript of the show is also available, as well as an audio podcast.
