Clinical Research Program

The mission of the Clinical Research Program (CRP) is to enhance clinical and translational research at the NIEHS by:

  1. Developing resources and systems for faculty, laboratories and groups in the conduct of human investigation.
  2. Fostering growth in clinical research and building new areas of collaboration between basic and clinical scientists.
  3. Providing an effective interface between investigators, health care professionals, the clinical research unit and other clinical facilities in the area.
  4. Developing and conducting clinical research educational programs for investigators, coordinators and administrators.
  5. Establishing core facilities and support needed for human investigation.

The CRP helps scientists to translate their basic laboratory findings to clinical investigations for studying the interaction between genetic susceptibility and environmental factors as related to complex traits and disease. The CRP consists of several research groups that focus on a wide variety of environmental conditions including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, reproductive disease, neural tube defects, cancer and many others. The ultimate goal of clinical research at the NIEHS is to intervene in environmental human disease by developing better methods for identifying high risk populations and diagnostic tools, and by establishing novel preventative and therapeutic strategies.
