Laboratory of Molecular Toxicology

Research Summary

The research of the Laboratory of Molecular Toxicology (LMT) examines the mechanisms through which environmental factors impact critical biological processes, focusing on how such changes lead to toxicity and disease. Particular emphasis is placed on the applications of genetic and genomic approaches in LMT analysis of important gene/environment interactions.

The NIEHS Microarrays Group operates out of LMT and supports genetic and genomic aspects of work conducted throughout the Division of Intramural Research (DIR) including the National Toxicology Program (NTP).

John B. Pritchard, Ph.D., is Acting Chief of the Laboratory of Molecular Toxicology (LMT)(www.niehs.nih.gov/research/atniehs/labs/lmt/index.cfm), Chief of the Laboratory of Pharmacology & Chemistry (LPC)(www.niehs.nih.gov/research/atniehs/labs/lpc/index.cfm), and head of the Renal Pharmacology Group(www.niehs.nih.gov/research/atniehs/labs/lpc/renal/index.cfm) in LPC. For more information about research, training opportunities or institutional roles of any of these programs, please contact John Pritchard.

The LMT investigates:

  • Early events in ras induced tumor formation
  • Molecular responses to environmental stress and the impact of those mechanisms on the development and progression of injury and disease
  • Signaling changes initiated by heavy metals through the application of genetic tools in model organisms, e.g., C. elegans
  • Mechanisms of toxicity resulting from inhalation exposure to environmental chemicals
  • Development of mathematical tools and models to integrate multiple endpoints, e.g., dosimetry, genomics, proteomics, to better understand the consequences of exposure to toxic agents
