Research Summary

Ronald Herbert, D.V.M., Ph.D. heads the Pathology Support Group (PSG) which is comprised of the Histology, Electron Microscopy, and Immunohistochemistry laboratories. All three laboratories are integral and essential components of the Institute by functioning as service laboratories with the primary roles of providing specialized support to multiple in-house investigators at NIEHS. The Histology laboratory is a state-of-the-art facility that provides standard (fixation, embedding, sectioning and staining of necropsy and surgical tissue specimens) and specialized (decalcification and histochemical staining) histological support services. Likewise, the Electron Microscopy laboratory provides tissue processing and embedding, routine electron microscopy, photomicroscopy, and photographic processing. The Immunohistochemistry lab is the most widely used specialized technique provided by PSG. Assistance is given to investigators with respect to the proper collection and fixation of the tissue, immunohistochemical staining and the evaluation and interpretation of the stain. In addition, the PSG maintains a fully-equipped necropsy laboratory.

PSG facilities annually maintain high levels of production at NIEHS. The Histology laboratory produces 8000 to 10,000 paraffin blocks and over 30,000 to 40,000 stained/unstained glass slides for microscopic evaluation. The Electron Microscopy laboratory prepares approximately 250-300 tissue specimen blocks and 150 to 200 grids for ultrastructural examination.
