The Fluorescence Microscopy and Imaging Center (FMIC) is a core facility for use by employees of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), located in Research Triangle Park (RTP), North Carolina (NC), USA. NIEHS is a part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The FMIC provides researchers in the NIEHS Division of Intramural Research (DIR) access to a variety of techniques that push the envelope on 3D cellular imaging. Most of the techniques are centered on obtaining digitized images of fluorescent cells from a confocal microscope.

This Web site is designed to make NIEHS intramural scientists aware of:

  • Specific equipment and capabilities within the FMIC
  • Information new users need to use the FMIC equipment
  • Confocal microscopy protocols
  • Personnel that can be relied upon to help

The site also provides information to the NIEHS and non-NIEHS community on:

  • Underlying concepts of confocal microscopy and related techniques, including examples
  • Types of research projects that have successfully used confocal microscopy at NIEHS
