Introduction

Ongoing research at the NOAA National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) is progressing toward producing a new satellite resource for climate science. Originating from the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP), the data are observations from all channels on the

  • Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) series,
  • the European Meteorological satellite (Meteosat) series and
  • the Japanese Geostationary Meteorological Satellite (GMS) series.
  • the Chinese Fen-yung 2C (FY2) series.

The period of record covers 1983 through the present, yet its total size is slightly more than one terabyte since it is sampled to 10 km and 3 hour resolution. Since the original data is archived in various formats, a consistent format is being developed to make access to the data set easier.
