The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers is responsible for developing the nation's waterways for commercial navigation. The Corps' navigation projects include waterway channels, anchorages, turning basins, locks and dams, harbor areas, protective jetties and breakwaters.

The Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory is heavily involved in navigation channel design. Activity includess: physical model investigations; development of mathematical models; ship and tow simulations; development of methods which measure and verify the performance of navigation models; and tow/ship effects on the environment.
