Haskell Health Center

Location

The Haskell Health Center campus is nearly a mile from downtown Lawrence and the University of Kansas. The city of Lawrence is located within northeastern Kansas, in between Topeka, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri.

Health Care Delivery

Haskell Health Center is an outpatient health center, located on campus of the Haskell Indian Nations University (HINU) in Lawrence, Kansas. Medical services include pediatric, family practice and internal medicine. Additional services include optometry, dietary, mammography, well-child and diabetes clinics. Mental health services include education, assessment, evaluations, referrals and medical assistance. Dental services include restorative, emergency and preventative dental care.

Population

Within the City of Lawrence, there are 81,000 residents and over twenty six thousand university students. Lawrence is a "college town". The city's population ranks within the upper 96th percentile of college graduates, with nearly 48% having a bachelor's degree or higher. The city's public school system among top metropolitan school districts in the nation in 2004 (Expansion Management Magazine), and typically ranks in the upper 10 percentile nationally in its public schools. Lawrence schools are also ranked among the safest in the Nation. Lawrence shares a rich history of social and political responsibility. Frequently referred as "Free State", the Lawrence community was a powerful advocate of anti-slavery prior to the Civil War, and served as an underground railroad for escaped slaves.

Haskell Health Center's patients reflect a rich diversity in Native American Cultures. Nearly two hundred fifty Tribes are represented within facilities annual user population with Prairie Band Pottawatomie, Navajo, Cherokee, Choctaw and Creek representing the highest percentage of patients. Both HINU and Haskell Health Center share close relationships with Kansas University, KU Medical Center. HINU students frequently take classes at KU (and visa versa), and are allowed to enroll at KU as an in-state resident. Because of the easy access to colleges, there is an abundance of sports, culture, arts, recreation and education within a five mile radius of any location of Lawrence. Approximately twenty five percent of Haskell Health Center's patients are college students from HINU and University of Kansas.

Patients are typically young adult, mobile, with some college education. Many patients are KU or HINU graduates have chosen to reside within the vicinity and are employed through a number of public and private sector jobs. Additionally, Haskell has been a major influence of Indian politics, with alumni in Tribal governments within all regions of the United States.

Nearby Tribal reservations include Prairie Band Pottawatomie, Kickapoo, Iowa, and Sac and Fox, and many of these tribal members are represented within Haskell Health Center's patient population.

The clinic is an appointment-based clinic offering outpatient, general and family practice medicine including laboratory testing. Appointments are recommended, as walk-in availability is limited.
