Where Do Volunteers Go?

Since its establishment in 1961, the Peace Corps has served in more than 139 countries around the globe. Today, Peace Corps Volunteers work and live in more than 74 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Mediterranean, South America and Central America, the Caribbean, and the Pacific Islands.

How does the Peace Corps choose countries in which to have programs?

First, a country must invite the Peace Corps. Usually, the leader of the country sends a personal invitation to the President of the United States. Second, due to a limited budget, the Peace Corps chooses countries with the greatest need for skilled Volunteers. Finally, the Peace Corps makes a thorough assessment to make sure that Volunteers who go to a country will be safe.

How do Volunteers get placed?

Though applicants can indicate a geographic preference, the Peace Corps matches an applicant's educational and work experiences with the requests and needs of host countries.
