Mayor Nutter, Deputy Mayor Cutler Announce Bicycle Initiatives

September 12 — Today Mayor Michael A. Nutter and Deputy Mayor Rina Cutler announced two new bicycle initiatives to begin in the month of September - 1,400 new bicycle racks will be installed around the City and the William Penn Foundation will convene a working group to explore the possibility of a bikeshare program in Philadelphia. Mayor Nutter and Deputy Mayor Cutler made these announcements while attending the Commerce Bank Bike Philly Tour. Philadelphia's Educational Promise

September 11 - In a wide-ranging speech at South Philadelphia High School tonight Mayor Nutter will announce that, working together, the City of Philadelphia and the School District of Philadelphia have agreed to the implement the following:

An early warning system aimed at identifying children in the 6th grade who fit the profile of a potential dropout in later grades.

Parents will be informed of the potential dropout issue and children will receive assistance to overcome their educational deficits.

The City of Philadelphia will realign more than $200 million in funding for after-school, summer and prevention programs to help at-risk students.

The City and School District are committed to opening more Re-Engagement Centers in neighborhoods to serve better young adults who want to complete their education.

The City and School District are committed to securing more funding for educational options to serve the returning student population.

The City and School District are committed to expanding the Safe Corridors program to all schools that need enhanced safety.

The City and School District will expand the number of Student Success Centers and seek college and university partners.

The City will establish a CollegeReady Philadelphia program to expand college preparation services to more Philadelphia students.

The City will develop a program to help its employees complete their college degrees.

The Mayor’s Commission on Literacy will be charged with developing a citywide literacy program. more »

September 7, 2008 - Mayor Michael A. Nutter has appointed leaders from government, non-profits and the private sector to serve on a newly-created Sustainability Advisory Board (SAB). I am deeply saddened by the death of Philadelphia Police Officer Isabel Nazario, killed in the line of duty yesterday evening. My thoughts and prayers and the thoughts and prayers of all Philadelphians are with her mother Patricia, her thirteen year old daughter Jazmine, and her sister Officer Maritza Mohamad, a Philadelphia Police Officer in the 39th District. We also pray for the recovery of Officer Nazario’s partner, Police Officer Terry Tull, who was injured in the same accident. more »

August 14 – Today the City of Philadelphia and representatives of AFSCME District Council 47 reached a tentative agreement on a one-year contract. Mayor Michael A. Nutter made the following statement this afternoon:

Mayor Nutter, Deputy Mayor Schwarz, Commissioner Ambrose, Announce More Changes at DHS

August 4 — Today Mayor Michael A. Nutter, Deputy Mayor Schwarz and Commissioner Anne Marie Ambrose announced more changes in response to the Grand Jury findings in relation to the death of Danieal Kelly in 2006. Two City workers under indictment have already been suspended with intent to dismiss and one named in the Grand Jury report has already resigned. Seven more City workers named in the District Attorney’s report will be suspended effective immediately, pending further investigation. The Commissioner’s Office, in conjunction with the Office of the Inspector General and the Chief Integrity Officer, will determine what, if any, further action should be taken. more »

I received a briefing today from the District Attorney on the charges that have been brought in the tragic case of the death of Danieal Kelly.

I am deeply saddened and outraged at the events that are described in the Grand Jury Report that was released today. The treatment that Danieal Kelly endured was utterly reprehensible and I condemn those responsible in the strongest possible terms. These individuals must be dealt with in the strongest possible legal manner. more »

July 17 — Pennsylvania Governor Edward Rendell, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, and The Pew Charitable Trusts today announced plans for extensive landscape and roadway enhancements on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway,

Mayor Nutter Appoints New Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations

July 08 – Mayor Michael A. Nutter announced his nine appointees to the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations at a press conference in City Hall today.
The Mayor appointed: Rev. James Allen, Rabbi Rebecca Alpert, Regina Austin, Fernando Chang-Muy, Tom Earle, Cynthia Figueroa, Chukri Khorchid, Nick Torres and Kay Kyungsun Yu. Rev. Allen will continue to serve as the Chair of the Commission. more »

July 07 – Mayor Michael A. Nutter announced today that Philadelphia is now the largest city on the East Coast of the United States to move to citywide, single stream recycling.
He also kicked off the new “All Together Now” single stream recycling program with a “BINdependence Day” celebration in City Hall. All Philadelphia residents are now “free” to put all recyclables into one bin - any bin. more »
