More Information on Zone Maps Outside the US

How do I get zone maps for locations outside of the US?

There are several national model building codes in the US. In the US, adoption of a code is up to local authorities. For federally financed or insured buildings, the NEHRP provisions are required. For foreign countries there may be a national authority. Historically, in many countries, seismic design has often not been required unless there has been prior damage or loss of life at the city. This means that the standards may not have a map associated with them. It is also possible that maps showing probabilistic ground motion hazard have been computed, but that they have not yet been adopted into codes.

For recent status in international hazard assessment, including either zonation maps or probabilistic ground motion maps for some countries, see the following publication: McGuire, Robin K., ed. The Practice of Earthquake Hazard Assessment, IASPEI & ESC, 1993.

A note in the cover reads, "For single copies of this monograph, please contact: Dr. E.R. Engdahl Secretary-General, IASPEI U.S. Geological Survey MS 967, Box 25046 Denver Federal Center Denver, CO 80225, USA Internet: engdahl@gldfs.cr.usgs.gov"

Upon response to enquiries, Engdahl writes: To: Monograph Requesters From: Bob Engdahl IASPEI Secretary-General Re: IASPEI/ESC Monograph The Practice of Earthquake Hazard Assessment IASPEI has finally found the financial means to make additional copies of the Monograph "The Practice of Earthquake Hazard Assessment". Please send me your complete mailing address and I would be happy to send you a copy. IASPEI only asks that you send a check or cash for US$10 to help defray copying costs and to ensure that the Monograph will remain available to future requesters. Please make the check payable to "IASPEI" and send it directly to me, Dr. E.R. Engdahl, 255 Inca Parkway, Boulder, Colorado, 80303, USA. Thank you for your patience.
