NIDCR Individual Predoctoral Dental Scientist Fellowship (F30)
Provides a maximum of five years support to students pursuing both DDS/DMD and PhD degrees.

Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards for Individual Predoctoral Fellows (F31)
Provides a maximum of five years support to promising doctoral candidates conducting dissertation research in biomedical, behavioral, or clinical research areas relevant to the scientific mission of NIDCR

Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards for Individual Predoctoral Fellowships (F31) to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research
Provides a maximum of five years support to students pursuing a PhD degree.

Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards (NRSA) for Individual Postdoctoral Fellows (F32)
Provides up to three years support for trainees at academic institutions to broaden their scientific background or extend their potential for research in health-related areas.

F33

Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Awards (NRSA) for Individual Senior Fellows (F33)
Provides health research training for experienced scientists, enabling them to update their skills or make changes in the direction of their career. Support may be requested for up to two years.

K02

Independent Scientist Award (K02)
Provides up to five years support to newly independent scientists who have a concurrent R01 award.

K08

Mentored Clinical Scientist Research Career Development Award (K08)
Encourages dentists or other clinicians to pursue a career in oral health research.  The prospective candidate must have a D.D.S./D.M.D., M.D. or other clinical doctoral degree, and be willing to spend a minimum of 75 percent of full-time professional effort conducting research.

Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award (K23) 
Supports three to five years of supervised study for clinically trained professionals with a doctoral degree to pursue training in patient-oriented research.  

K24

Midcareer Investigator Award in Patient-Oriented Research (K24)
Provides up to five years support to mid-career clinical scientists at academic institutions. Up to 50 percent release time is provided to awardees to pursue patient-oriented research and act as mentors for beginning clinical investigators

K25

Mentored Quantitative Research Career Development Award (K25)
Supports career development of investigators with quantitative scientific and engineering backgrounds outside of biology or medicine who wish to focus their research on behavioral, basic or clinical biomedical research.

L30/40

Loan Repayment Programs (for Clinical Research and Pediatric Research)
Meant to attract talented health professionals to careers in clinical, health disparity, pediatric, or contraceptive and infertility research. In exchange for a two-year commitment to a research career, NIH will repay up to $35,000 per year of qualified educational debt, pay an additional 39% of the repayments to cover Federal taxes, and may reimburse any state taxes that result from these benefits.

Research Project Grants
Support a discrete, specified project performed by an investigator in an area of specific interest and competency.  See also NIDCR's Current Funding Opportunities and the NIH Research Project Grant Program R01.

R03

NIDCR Small Grant Program for New Investigators (R03)
Support for scientists who are in the early stages of establishing an independent research career in dental and craniofacial research. Budgets for direct costs of up to $150,000 over a two-year period may be requested.  See also Notice; NIDCR's Current Funding Opportunities

Small Research Grants
Provide up to two years support for scientists in the following areas:

Pathophysiology Bisphosphonates-associated Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (R03)

Temporomandibular Joint and Muscle Disorders: Pathophysiological Mechanisms Linking Comorbid Conditions (R03)

NIDCR Small Research Grants for Data Analysis and Statistical Methodology (R03)

R13

NIDCR Support for Conferences and Scientific Meetings (R13/U13)
Support for conferences, workshops and scientific meetings in areas related to the NIDCR mission.

R15

Academic Research Enhancement Awards (AREA)
Support small-scale research projects conducted by faculty primarily in baccalaureate degree-granting domestic institutions.  Funding is available for up to three years for a total of $150,000 in direct costs over the total award period. 

R21

Exploratory/Developmental Grants
Encourage development of new research activities in categorical program areas. Support generally is restricted in time and level of support.  See also NIDCR's Current Funding Opportunities

R25

Education Projects
Support development and/or implementation of a program related to one or more areas of education, information, training, technical assistance, coordination, or evaluation.  See Oral Health Research Education Grants (R25)

R41

Small Business Technology Transfer Grants (STTR)-Phase I
Support cooperative R&D projects between small businesses and research institutions. The grants, limited in time and amount, establish the technical merit and feasibility of ideas that have potential for commercialization. R42

Small Business Technology Transfer Grants (STTR)-Phase 2
Support in-depth development of cooperative R&D projects between small businesses and research institutions. The grants are limited in time and amount. They fund projects whose feasibility was established in Phase I, and which have potential for commercialization. Small Business Innovative Research Grants (SBIR)- Phase I
Support projects, limited in time and amount, to establish the technical merit and feasibility of R&D ideas that may lead to a commercial product or service.  See also NIDCR's Current Funding Opportunities

R44

Small Business Innovation Research Grants (SBIR) - Phase II
Support in-depth development of R&D ideas whose feasibility was established in Phase I and which are likely to result in commercial products or services. SBIR Phase II are considered Fast-Track and do not require Council review.  See also NIDCR's Current Funding Opportunities

R56

High Priority, Short-Term Project Award (R56)
Provide limited, interim research support for high-priority pending R01 applications that score outside the payline.  Recipients are expected to gather additional data and submit a revised R01 application. Candidates for the R56 award must be nominated by NIDCR Program staff.  (See also NIDCR's Notice of Intent to Participate in the High Priority, Short-Term Project Award (R56) NOT-OD-04-047)  

T32

Dental School Joint DDS or DMD/Masters Degree NRSA Research Training Program (T32)
Provides support to dental schools that propose to develop a joint DDS or DMD/Masters degree training program.  The Masters degree must be in clinical/behavorial research, or in public health.

Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Institutional Dental Research Training Program
Provides training opportunities in dental, oral and craniofacial research by supporting integrated but flexible institutional programs. The awards are comprehensive training grants to fund pre-doctoral, post-doctoral and short-term trainees.

U01

Research Project--Cooperative Agreements
Set up an assistance relationship between NIH and the award recipient for projects similar to grants in which NIH acts as a partner in the research effort.

U24

Resource-Related Research Project-Cooperative Agreements
Support cofunded research projects to improve the capacity of resources that serve biomedical research.

U54

Specialized Center-Cooperative Agreement
Supports research and development from basic to clinical, including ancillary supportive activities that create a multidisciplinary focus on a disease or a biomedical problem. Centers may also serve as regional or national resources for special research purposes.  See also NIDCR's Current Funding Opportunities

P50

Specialized Center
Supports any part of the full range of research and development from very basic to clinical; may involve activities such as patient care necessary to the primary research of R&D effort. The spectrum of activities comprises a multidisciplinary attack on a specific disease entity or biomedical problem area. These grants are usually developed in response to an announcement of the programmatic needs of an Institute. Centers may also serve as regional or national resources for special research purposes.

P60

Comprehensive Center
Supports a multipurpose unit designed to bring together divergent but related facilities within a given community. It may be based in a university or may involve other locally available resources such as hospitals, computer facilities, and regional centers. It may include specialized centers, program projects, and projects as integral components. Its objectives usually are to foster biomedical research and development; initiate and expand community education, screening, and counseling programs; and to educate medical and allied health professionals concerning the problems of diagnosis and treatment of a specific disease.

Y01

Interagency Agreement
Transfers funds from NIH to a federal organization outside the Department of Health and Human Services to acquire specific products, services, or studies.
