Travel Management

Travel Management Overview

National forests are required to designate a system of roads, trails, and areas that are open to motor vehicle use for both off-highway and highway-legal vehicles. The goal of the Forest's travel management process is to create a safe and affordable road and trail system that provides recreational opportunities and appropriate access while protecting Forest resources. The Forest is committed to doing this openly and collaboratively with the interested public. In early 2005, public meetings that included motorized and non-motorized recreation enthusiasts, local leaders, and residents were held in several locations to discern where Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) recreation was both desirable and acceptable. As a result, over 650 miles of existing, open roads were designated for OHV use on the Colville National Forest.

2007 Interim Motor Vehicle Use Maps (IMVUM)

Interim Motor Vehicle Use Maps depict the existing system of roads and trails available to different classes of motor vehicles. These maps are available at any of the offices listed below or on-line by clicking on the following links.

The following documents describe the various requirements for OHV use on the Colville National Forest and answer other questions regarding motor vehicle use.

2007 Travel Management Meetings and Next Steps

The primary focus of the travel management meetings held in early 2007 was to improve the current route system by creating loops and system connectivity within twelve project areas across the Forest. The working groups prioritized the proposals and the initial screening placed them into categories based upon the ease of implementation. The next step in the process will be the Motorized Mixed Use Analysis (MMUA) and Travel Analysis of the routes identified in these proposals. For more information about these proposals check out the Travel Management References and Proposals link below.
