National Advisory Committee on Microbiological Criteria For Foods to Hold Public Meeting

WASHINGTON, Sept. 15, 2008 - The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) today announced the National Advisory Committee on Microbiological Criteria for Foods (NACMCF) will hold public meetings on Sept. 22 - 26.

The full Committee will discuss parameters for inoculated-pack challenge study protocols and determination of the most appropriate technologies for FSIS to adopt in performing routine and baseline microbiological analyses.

The full Committee will hold a public meeting on Friday, Sept. 26, from 9 am to 1 pm in the USDA's South Building Cafeteria, 1400 Independence Ave., S.W. Washington, D.C. 20250.

In addition, the subcommittee discussing parameters for inoculated-pack challenge study protocols will hold open meetings on Monday, Sept. 22 and Tuesday, Sept. 23, from 8:30 am to 5 pm.

The subcommittee on determination of the most appropriate technologies for FSIS to adopt in performing routine and baseline microbiological analyses will hold open meetings on Wednesday, Sept. 24 and Thursday, Sept. 25, from 8:30 am to 5 pm.

The subcommittee meetings will be held at the Aerospace Center, 901 D Street, S.W., Rooms 369-371, Washington, D.C. 20024.

The NACMCF was established in 1988 to provide scientific advice and recommendations to the Secretary of Agriculture and the Secretary of Health and Human Services on public health issues relative to the safety and wholesomeness of the U.S. food supply. The Committee formulates positions on the development of microbiological criteria, the review and evaluation of epidemiological and risk assessment data and methodologies for assessing microbiological hazards in foods. The Committee also provides advice to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Departments of Commerce and Defense.
