NWS Fiber Optic Conversion For Private T1's

Information    Schedule

The information on this web page applies to the NWS WSR-88D locations included in EHB-6, Modification Note 88, INSTALLATION OF FIBER OPTICS AT SELECTED NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SITES. The project provides replacement of existing private T1 copper communications circuits between the RDA and RPG with a fiber optics link for selected NWS WSR-88D locations. Installation of the fiber optic cable eliminates susceptibility to EMI/RFI noise and interference on these links and provides an increase in bandwidth between the RDA and RPG in anticipation of future radar enhancements.

This mod will be accomplished by a contract installation team from the Radar Operations Center (ROC). Select the link above for the current installation schedule. ROC Team-RSIS will coordinate with individual site POCs concerning minor schedule adjustments. The deployment manager is Mr. Larry Schinn, ROC Team RSIS, (405) 573-3420. Be advised the kit deployment strategy for this contractor installed modification has recently changed. The ROC initially approved the contractor proposal to have all components kitted by a subcontractor and shipped directly to each location as a cost saving measure. The subcontractor was unable to provide the kits in one shipment per location as was originally planned. Instead, multiple boxes from different vendors have been or are in process of being sent to the initial sites. Team RSIS contacted the affected locations to advise that the installation team cannot perform the fiber optic installation until all components have been received and accounted for at a site. Sites are requested to fax the shipping invoice from each box received to Team RSIS at 405-573-3450. Sites on the schedule link above with a SEE NOTE 4 in the comment field have received or will continue to receive multiple shipments.

For the remainder of locations included in the effectivity of Modification Note 88, the ROC contractor will bring most of the kit with them to the site. There will still be 2 boxes shipped direct to the sites in advance; one box from Fiberdyne and one box from Annixter. Sites on the schedule link above with a SEE NOTE 3 in the comment field will receive only two shipments. The box from Fiberdyne will contain the outside plant fiber optic cable (cut to length) and 4 patch cords. The Annixter box will contain the innerduct. The affected locations are requested to fax the shipping invoice from the outside of both boxes to Team RSIS at 405-573-3450. Without these invoices, the ROC will not know these kit parts have been received and the site is ready for installation. The contract install team cannot perform the fiber optic installation until these components have been received and accounted for at a site.
