Basin Delineation

National Basin Delineation Project (NBDP)

NSSL provides basin customization technical support, basin data set access and distribution, and the re-delineation of basins in areas where significant errors exist within individual Weather Forecast Offices.  This task has been expanded from the radar centric repository to a seamless hydrologically connected national repository of the NWS's Flash Flood Monitoring and Prediction System (FFMP) basin and stream dataset.  This dataset will work in conjunction with the mosaicked data sources of precipitation.  The ongoing support of FFMP in the area of basin mapping will continue.

The NBDP was originally undertaken by NSSL and CIMMS in 2000.  The purpose of the NBDP was to centralize the consistent definition of flash-flood-scale basins for the conterminous U.S., Puerto Rico, and Guam.  FFMP basin datasets consisting of synthetic streams, basin boundaries, radar bin center points, and other reference data were assembled for 143 WSR-88D coverage areas and delivered to 115 Weather Forecast Offices.
