Description
The Climate Change Data and Detection (CCDD) program ensures that the data needed to understand the climate system is available for analysis. The data and resulting products extend the existing long-term climate record and serve as essential input to predictive models. In addition, CCDD provides support for documenting variations in climate on time scales ranging from less than one year to periods of 100 years and longer. Support is also provided for the analysis of observed climate variations and changes to identify causes that are consistent with Earth's long-term climate history.
The Climate Change Data and Detection (CCDD) Program focuses on the following objectives:
to provide data and information management support (i.e. data assembly, processing, inventory, access, distribution and archiving) for a variety of national and international programs of primary interest to the Climate and Global Change Program, e.g., the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), the U.S. Climate Change Science Program (CCSP), U.S. CLIVAR (Climate Variability and Predictability) Program, the Tri-lateral North American Climate Extremes Assessment, etc.;
to provide data and information management support related to cross cutting science efforts necessary to assess seasonal, interannual, decadal, and longer climate variations and changes (e.g., data archeology);
to document the quantitative character of observed climate variations and changes;
to attribute changes in the observed climate record to specific climate forcings; and
to establish linkages between the paleoclimatological record and the modern instrumental record, with a focus on interannual/decadal variability, extremes, and spatial/temporal completeness for the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
These objectives are accomplished through a set of continuing, focused activities by governmental and academic researchers. In addition to supporting the Climate and Global Change research activities listed above, the data sets, climate products, and information provided by CCDD projects are relevant to assessing the impact of climate variations and change.
