Online Materials

Coastal Zone Management

Coastal Zone Management Publications (Web site). This Web site offers a wide range of documents relating to coastal zone managment, available for download as pdfs.

Marine Protected Areas

Fact sheets about marine protected areas are available. They are:

MPA Connections (Web site) is the National Marine Protected Areas (MPA) Center's quarterly e-mail newsletter. It informs those interested about the MPA Center's resources and opportunities, including updates on research, management tools, publications and studies, inventories, and frequently asked questions.

MPA Education Poster Site Descriptions (pdf, 1240Kb). This fact sheet is designed to accompany the MPA Education Poster (see Offline Materials). It provides information specific to each of the MPA sites shown on the poster, along with Web links for more in-depth information.

MPA Poster Activity Sheet (pdf, 224Kb). This activity sheet is designed to help educators use the MPA Education Poster (see Offline Materials) to introduce MPAs to their students. It provides background material about MPAs and a series of questions that can be used to lead a discussion on some of the resources protected by MPAs.

National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS)

NERRS System Overview (pdf, 2.71Mb). This fact-sheet describes the National Estuarine Research Reserve System which protects more than one million acres of estuarine habitat, conducts essential research, and provides a variety of educational opportunities.

NERRS System-wide Monitoring Program (pdf, 1.48Mb). This fact sheet describes the System-wide Monitoring Program which measures changes in estuarine water quality to track the health of our nation's national estuarine research reserves. It also provides valuable long-term data on water quality and weather at high-frequency time intervals to researchers, natural resource managers, and other coastal decision makers.
NERRS Graduate Research Fellowship (pdf, 4.44Mb). This fact sheet describes the reserve system's Graduate Research Fellowship Program which offers qualified masters and doctoral students an opportunity to address scientific questions of local, regional, and national significance. The result is research focused on improving coastal management.
NERRS Coastal Training Program (pdf, 3.83Mb). This fact sheet describes how the Coastal Training Program addresses critical coastal resource management issues by providing the most up-to-date scientific information and access to technologies and skill-building opportunities to key professional audiences responsible for making decisions about coastal resources.

Coral Reef Conservation Program

About NOAA's Coral Reef Conservation Program (Web page) includes a short history of the Program, a downloadable fact sheet about the Program, contact information, and links to a variety of supplemental resource documents that are available for download as pdfs.

NOAA Coral Reef News (Web page) includes highlights of the latest version of the downloadable monthly public newsletter on Coral Reef Conservation Program activities, links to pdf archives of all previous issues, and instructions to subscribe to the newsletter.

NOAA's Coral Reef Conservation Program Outreach and Education (Web site) includes a variety of public awareness materials, student resources, and lesson plans for educators.

NOAA's Coral Reef Information System (Web site) is designed to be a single point of access to NOAA coral reef information and data products that result from the work of NOAA's Coral Reef Conservation Program.

Offline Materials

MPA Education Poster (in cloth or paper). The MPA Education Poster, developed with the generous support of cartoonist Jim Toomey, highlights some of the different types of marine protected areas designated by federal agencies (see Online Materials for the companion pieces to the Education Poster, including a fact sheet with site descriptions and an activity sheet, both in pdf format).
