The National Institutes of Health announces the first annual meeting of its Pharmacogenetics Research Network. The all-day meeting will be held April 25, 2001, in the Lister Hill Auditorium (Building 38A) on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland.
Pharmacogenetics Research Network scientists are studying how genes affect people's responses to a wide array of medicines, including drugs used to treat cancer, asthma, depression, and other conditions. Central to the Network is a shared, state-of-the-art data repository, PharmGKB: The Pharmacogenetics and Pharmacogenomics Knowledge Base, which is housed at Stanford University.
The meeting will feature research presentations from Network scientists. The first of two panel discussions will address ethical issues related to pharmacogenetics research. In the second panel discussion, members of the Network-affiliated Industry Liaison Group will speak to the topic of opportunities for interactions with the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.
To foster pharmacogenetics research, the National Institute of General Medical Sciences established the Pharmacogenetics Research Network in April 2000. Other NIH components participating in the initiative include the National Cancer Institute; the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute; the National Human Genome Research Institute; the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences; and the National Library of Medicine.
