Rear Admiral Alan S. Thompson

Rear Adm. Alan Thompson photoRADM Thompson became Commander, Naval Supply Systems Command and 44th Chief of Supply Corps in March 2007. As such he commands a worldwide workforce of over 25,500 military and civilian personnel in providing a broad array of logistics support and retail services to U.S. and allied naval forces. As Chief of Supply Corps he is responsible for community management of over 3,400 active and Reserve Supply Corps officers and over 27,000 active and Reserve enlisted personnel.

Rear Admiral Thompson graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from UCLA where he received his commission through the Naval ROTC program in 1976. He also earned a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Florida and completed the Columbia University Graduate School of Business Senior Executive Program.

RADM Thompson has served in a variety of key leadership positions afloat and ashore. At sea, he served as Assistant Supply Officer, USS David R. Ray (DD 971), from 1977 to 1979; Supply Officer, USS Chandler (DDG 996) from 1981 to 1983; and as Supply Officer, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) from 1993 to 1995.

His shore duty assignments include: Director, Supply, Ordnance and Logistics Operations Division (N41) Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, Washington, D.C.; Supply Corps Officer Procurement Officer at the Naval Supply Systems Command, Washington, D.C.; Systems Development Branch Head and S-3 Weapon System Branch Head at the Naval Aviation Supply Office, Philadelphia; Supply Readiness and Weapons Systems Support Officer on the staff of the Commander, Naval Air Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet; Supply Officer, Naval Air Station, Miramar; Executive Assistant to the Commander and Chief of Supply Corps at the Naval Supply Systems Command, Washington, D.C.; Head of the Spares Programs and Policy Branch on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations; Commanding Officer, Fleet and Industrial Supply Center Norfolk; CNO Fellow on the CNO Strategic Studies Group; and Commander, Defense Supply Center Columbus.

RADM Thompson's personal awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, three Legions of Merit, four Meritorious Service Medals, two Navy Commendation Medals, the Navy Achievement Medal, and a number of unit and campaign awards. He is a qualified Naval Aviation Supply Officer and Surface Warfare Supply Corps Officer. RADM Thompson is a member of the Department of the Navy Acquisition Professional Community.
