The U. S. Geological Survey’s National Wetlands Research Center and the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service will sponsor the ninth annual Acadiana Migratory Bird Day Celebration, May 6 and May 8 with a poster contest, bird seminars and a morning of birding at Lake Martin.
The celebration will begin with a ceremony honoring Lafayette Parish students who are winners of a bird poster contest. It will take place at 6 p.m. at the National Wetlands Research Center, 700 Cajundome Blvd., Lafayette. Winning posters will be on display. Prizes, donated by Louisiana Birders Anonymous and Wild Birds Unlimited, will be awarded for grades K-2, 3-5, and 6-8. Prizes in each category include a $100 savings bond for first place; $75 savings bond, second place; and $50 savings bond, third place.
Following the award ceremony at the center will be three talks beginning at 6:30 p.m. Gina Stanton and Chuck Williams of Wildlife in Distress will give a presentation on “A Day in the Life of a Wildlife Rehabilitator.” They will have several live birds to show.
At 7:15 p.m. Mike Olinde of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries will discuss the “American Woodcock: Spring Sky Dancer.”
At 8:00 p.m. Dr. Clay Green, biology department, University of Louisiana at Lafayette will speak on “Reddish Egrets: Mud Flat Dancers.”
No reservations are needed for the free seminars, but seating is limited to the first 80 participants. Attendees will receive a colorful 2004 International Migratory Bird Day poster.
On Saturday, May 8 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., the local birding group Louisiana Birders Anonymous will have spotting scopes set up along Rookery Road at Lake Martin and invite participants to enjoy the spectacular wading birds at the Lake Martin spoonbill-egret-anhinga-ibis-heron rookery. Join birding experts from Louisiana Birders Anonymous, U. S. Geological Survey and U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and receive an identification guide to the common birds at Lake Martin.
