Who: The USGS National Wetlands Research Center
What: Kick off of year-long celebration of the 125th anniversary of the U.S. Geological Survey
One hundred twenty-five years ago, on March 3, U.S. President Rutherford
B. Hayes signed into law a bill authorizing the creation of the USGS. Since
then, the USGS has become the federal source for science about the Earth,
its natural and
living resources, natural hazards (such as storms, floods, hurricanes, volcanic
eruptions, earthquakes) and the environment.
In recognition of this historic milestone, the center will recognize several employees who have recently received awards or made significant contributions in their fields. They will include Center Director Bob Stewart, who this past Saturday was named "Professional Conservationist of the Year" by the Louisiana Wildlife Federation. Representatives of the federation are expected to attend.
