Free Software

The World Data Center for Paleoclimatology in Boulder distributes several software packages for use on an As-Is basis: we cannot provide any support nor can we guarantee the software's performance. We encourage authors of any software of interest to the paleoclimatic community to contribute their software for distribution on this page. Please contact us for more information.
AnalySeries AnalySeries MacIntosh time series analysis tool by Didier Paillard, LSCE. The latest version of AnalySeries is compatable with Mac OSX and is available at the LSCE website. The software is posted as a stuffit archive (.zip) file. The file can be downloaded, then opened with Stuffit Expander (a free utility available at http://www.stuffit.com/mac/expander/). For further information please contact Didier Paillard (didier.paillard@lsce.ipsl.fr). Previous versions (v.1.*) formerly distributed here by WDC Paleo are not compatible with current Mac operating systems.
Arand Arand MacIntosh time series and spectral analysis software package written by Philip Howell at Brown University. The software allows the user to assign time to depth from an age model, interpolate data at an even time step, perfrom spectral and cross-spectral analysis, and filter data. The program is stored as a self extracting archive (.sea) created with Stuffit.
C2 C2 New! Those interested in software for developing transfer functions or plotting stratigraphic diagrams may want to look at a new Windows program, C2, written by Steve Juggins at Newcastle University. C2 is free to download and use but the data analysis and graphics functions are restricted to a maximum number of 75 samples. A license file that removes this restriction must be purchased to use C2 with larger datasets.
HIBAL Hydrologic Isotopic Balance Program HIBAL Hydrologic Isotopic Balance Model for Paleolake Systems. Benson and Paillet (2002) FORTRAN code for a simple hydrologic-isotopic-balance model for application to paleolake d18O records. Inputs to the model include discharge, on-lake precipitation, evaporation, and the d18O values of these fluid fluxes.
MapPad MapPad (for Microsoft Windows) is a program with which you save your site and associated text information to a simple text file, and then display it by clicking points on a map. Continental and regional maps are provided.
PaleoVu PaleoVu (Version 1.0 for Macintosh and Windows 3.1) is a complete browse and visualization tool for all types of paleoclimate and paleoecological data. Point and click to create queries, list site information, display or plot variables and data, or export the data for further processing and analysis. Note: PaleoVu is no longer maintained or supported. Data content is not being updated, and compatibility problems may exist with newer operating systems. PaleoVu is still suitable as a teaching tool, but our internet-based browsing tools are the most up to date source for paleoclimatic data.
PalyHelp PalyHelp New! A suite of six programs from L.J. Maher, Jr. at the University of Wisconsin. Includes programs for solving Mosimann's equations for confidence limits, and programs for solving and testing pollen concentration data. These programs run on Microsoft Windows, but the (Basic) source code is also available.
RedFit RedFit New! RedFit software estimates red-noise spectra directly from unevenly spaced time series, without requiring interpolation.
Showtime ShowTime (Version 0.6 for Microsoft Windows, data file updated 6 April 1998) is an animation that displays the distribution through space and time of individual pollen taxa. Currently, data are available only for North America for the past 15ka B.P. (Click the icon to download. The size of the self-extracting executable file is approximately 1.7 Mbytes.)
SiteSeer SiteSeer (Version 1.1 for Microsoft Windows) for browsing the contents of a pollen database, displaying summary information and summary pollen diagrams.
See How to... for guidance in retrieving and decompressing these applications.
We have an annotated list of additional software available from other sources. Additions to this list are welcome.
PANGAEA-Network software for visualization, exploration and interpretation of scientific data.
