Decommissioning Workshop Proceedings Available

The proceedings for the 1997 Minerals Management Service/California State Lands Commission Decommissioning Workshop, Decommissioning and Removal of Oil and Gas Facilities Offshore California: Recent Experiences and Future Deepwater Challenges, are available for distribution. For a hard copy of the proceedings, please contact John Smith, MMS proceeding coordinator, at (805) 389-7833.

Several agencies with an interest in the decommissioning of offshore oil platforms have formed an Interagency Decommissioning Working Group (IDWG). Individual participating agencies have been designated the lead in collecting information on such subjects as shell mounds, liability responsibility, scientific research, and timely removal of facilities. Issues will be addressed through a series of local workshops and seminars. A session on scientific research related to decommissioning was held during the MMS sponsored Fifth California Islands Symposium (March 29, April 1, 1999) at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History in Santa Barbara. In addition, information/technical papers will be developed by the Working Group addressing some of the above decommissioning issues. MMS representative is John Smith.
