Withholding of Sensitive Information

The NRC strives to be as open as possible and continues to encourage public participation in its licensing and oversight of the civilian uses of radioactive materials. However, following the events of September 11, 2001, the agency changed its procedures and practices to ensure it does not unnecessarily release information that terrorists could use to plan or execute an attack against facilities or citizens in the United States. Certain types of information previously considered in the public domain are no longer routinely released and will be treated as sensitive unclassified information.
