Subject: Policies and Procedures for Mixed Official and
Political Travel
The attached memorandum from the Deputy Assistant Secretary - Budget and
Finance, dated June 30, 1997, contains policies and procedures that were
developed to provide guidance to all Departmental personnel who may
perform or be responsible for processing mixed official and political
travel. Documenting mixed official and political travel as required by
these procedures should provide sufficient accountability to build
confidence in the travel program.
Document files required by these procedures should be retained for audit
by the General Accounting Office. The travel files maintained by the
Interior Service Center (ISC) will be the official record of the travel;
thus, it is essential that the ISC receive the documents necessary to
support the travel payments and resolve any audit questions.
