Robert Bailer, Ph.D.
Dr. Robert Bailer has joined the Vaccine
Research Center as the manager of the Immunology Core
Laboratory. The Immunology Core Laboratory is responsible
for the method development, validation and testing of
all samples from VRC clinical trials. In addition, Robert
is involved in the development and implementation of
the VRC infrastructure to assure cGMP/GLP practices.
Dr. Bailer received a B.S. in microbiology
from Colorado State University, followed by four years
of industrial experience at Abbott Laboratories in the
Pharmaceutical Products and Diagnostic Divisions. He
then went on to receive a Ph.D. from The Ohio State
University, followed by post-doctorate positions at
The Ohio State University School of Dentistry and The
Wistar Institute (Philadelphia, PA). The primary focus
of his graduate and post-doctorate research was retroviral
immunology. Dr. Bailer then returned to industry with
his most recent position as a Senior Scientist at Merck
& Co., Inc. at West Point, Pa, where he provided
technical support for analytical testing of licensed
and new biological products. In this capacity he was
involved in all aspects of method investigations, troubleshooting,
improvement, transfers and validations.
The VRC has recruited tremendously talented
collection of scientists and clinicians working towards
a common goal of developing vaccines for HIV and other
diseases. There is a sense of dedication and commitment
that has drawn us all to VRC and every reason to think
that our efforts will be successful.
