Working for ICE

As a member of the ICE team, your experience, skills and leadership will be applied to financial and trade investigations; cyber crimes; project analyses and management; litigating removal cases in immigration court; working with foreign authorities; intelligence gathering; investigations into arms and strategic technology violations; human trafficking and child exploitation. You’ll provide security for federal buildings, perform crowd control and surveillance, and work with other federal state and local authorities. Or, you may perform enforcement duties that include the apprehension, processing, detention and deportation of illegal or criminal aliens. Finally, you may work in any one of our technical, professional, administrative, or management occupations directly supporting our law enforcement mission.

Organizationally, ICE has four operational divisions, each containing a number of law enforcement, intelligence or mission support positions:

How We Recruit and Hire

ICE recruits two ways: 1) Criminal Investigators (Special Agents) are recruited by Special Agent recruiters with each of ICE’s Special Agent in Charge (SAC) Office. 2) All other ICE positions are listed on USA Jobs, the main government jobs site.

ICE uses a competitive hiring process to carefully and systematically evaluate applicants based on experience, education, and on specified knowledge, skills and abilities. All positions have certain minimum qualifications and requirements.

If you are interested in a specific position and believe you meet the requirements, follow the instructions on the announcement and apply for the job using the online system. Basic requirements include possessing U.S. citizenship and successful completion of a full background investigation. Some positions require a written test and a physical. Applicants may be required to submit to a drug test.

ICE Occupations

ICE is comprised of a combination of both uniformed and non-uniformed law enforcement occupations, as well as a large number of administrative, technical, management, and mission support positions. As vacancies occur, with the exception of Criminal Investigators, they are advertised on USA Jobs, complete with position description, duties, requirements, and application procedures. *Typical positions, including mission critical positions, are listed below:
