Distribution Centers Open to Help Ike Victims

September 15, 2008 - FEMA, TSA, the National Guard, and other state and federal partners are coordinating the distribution of millions of pre-packaged meals and millions of liters of water to victims of Hurricane Ike in Texas and Louisiana. Supplies and equipment--especially water, meals, generators, tents and tarps--will continue to move into the hardest hit areas as quickly as possible.

More than 2,500 search and rescue missions were completed by local, state and federal emergency responders in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike. On Saturday President Bust declared a major disaster for 29 counties in Texas. Read more

ICE Returns More than 1,000 Artifacts to Iraq

September 15, 2008 – U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement repatriated more than 1,000 cultural antiquities that had been seized for false declaration of country of origin to the Government of Iraq. The items included terra cotta cones, figurines, coins and remnants of cuneiform tablets. Import restrictions apply to any cultural property of Iraq. ICE handles investigations into cultural artifacts that show up on the world market. More at ICE.gov

September 11, 2008 (New York)– Secretary Chertoff joined New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and thousands of others at Ground Zero in a moment of silence marking the seventh anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks. Secretary Chertoff, on the eve of the 9/11 at the National Press Club, noted that while America is safer since September 11, there is still work to be done. "I don't think we should be hysterical, but I don't think we should be complacent, either, because just the fact that we are safer does not mean we are completely safe and the job is done."
