Getting to the Neuroscience Center Building (NSC)

The Neuroscience Center Building is located at 6001 Executive Boulevard Rockville, MD. NSC houses staff of several ICs of the NIH including NINDS, NIMH, and NIDA. Additional Extramural and most Intramural staff are found on the main NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland.

If you are planning a visit to NIH and have determined that your meeting is at the NSC, there are several ways to get here, detailed directions are provided below.

Upon your arrival, you will enter through the main lobby where you will be greeted at the security guard’s desk. Visitors who are not NIH employees most show a photo I.D., will be asked to sign in and will be issued a visitor’s pass. If you are carrying a laptop or other electronic equipment, you will receive a temporary property pass. In estimating your travel time, please allow for these security measures, particularly if you are arriving in a group.

Directions to NSC via Metrorail Red Line and NIH Shuttle

From any point in the Metro system, take the Red Line to Shady Grove. Exit from the Medical Center station. At the Metro station look for the NIH shuttle stop and take the free NIH shuttle "Executive Plaza" route which drops you off in front of building 6001.

Or take the Red Line to Shady Grove and exit instead at the White Flint station (which is two stops from the Medical Center station). The NSC building is a ten minute walk from White Flint station. As you exit the station, find Marinelli Road and walk west toward Executive Blvd.

Or you can board a Ride-On bus (routes 5, 26, or 81) for service along Executive Blvd. These routes stop at the driveway entrance to the NSC building and from there it’s a short walk to the building.

Driving Directions to NSC

If you are driving or arriving by taxi, please note that the visitor parking entrance is at the second driveway traveling from east to west. The first driveway is accessible only to NIH employees with fascards. The visitor parking lot is a paid facility operated by PMI. Up to the first ½ hour is free. The first hour is $2.00 and the maximum to closing is $7.00.

From Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport

Head north on the George Washington Parkway for approximately 12 miles. Exit onto I-495 (Capital Beltway), heading north to Maryland. From the Beltway (I-495), take (I-270) and head north towards Rockville. Stay to the right and bear off to the "Connector/Distributor" lanes. Exit at Montrose Road (east). Drive approximately 1.5 miles and either:

Turn right onto Rockville Pike. Turn right at the second traffic light onto Old Georgetown Road. At the second light, turn right onto Executive Boulevard. The NSC building is on your immediate right.

Or, turn right onto Executive Boulevard, drive approximately ½ mile and make a “U” turn at the intersection of Old Georgetown Road and Executive Boulevard. The NSC building is on your immediate right.

From Dulles International Airport

Head east on the Dulles Airport Access Road for approximately 13 miles. Exit onto I-495 (Capital Beltway), heading north to Bethesda/Baltimore. From the Beltway (I-495), take Exit 38 (I-270 north to Rockville-Frederick). Proceed approximately 3 miles to Montrose Road (east) Exit 4A. Drive 1.5 miles (3rd stop light). Turn right onto Executive Boulevard. Proceed for 1/2 mile. The NSC building is on your left.

From Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI)

Take the Baltimore-Washington Parkway south toward Washington, DC. At I-495 (Capital Beltway), head west toward Silver Spring/Bethesda. From the Beltway (I-495), take Exit 34 which is Rt. 355 (Wisconsin Ave. /Rockville Pike) and head north toward Rockville. Drive approximately 2.4 miles and turn left onto Old Georgetown Road. At the second light, turn right onto Executive Boulevard. The NSC building is on your immediate right.
