Purpose Statement: USDA has a vast number of IT assets that are managed using disparate approaches. These dissimilar approaches present a challenge for managing USDA's IT infrastructure. USDA can gain significant efficiencies and productivity increases by establishing a uniform IT Asset Management Program that provides the information necessary to manage IT assets from an enterprise perspective.

Expected Result: An IT asset management program that supports the establishment of a standards-based technology architecture for USDA. The IT asset management program will develop and implement an automated system for managing USDA's IT assets from both an agency and enterprise perspective. Knowing USDA's IT assets will lead to the development of enterprise approaches for procuring commonly used products.

Executive Sponsor: Gregory Parham, Associate Chief Information Officer for Information Resources Management

Scope: The project scope is to examine USDA's current IT Asset Management practices and those of other Federal agencies and industry and develop an integrated approach for managing USDA's IT Assets.

Goals: Project goals are as follows:

  • Develop thumbprint of current USDA IT Asset Management practices
  • Develop approach for USDA to manage its IT assets from an enterprise perspective
  • Identify commonly used products and services
  • Develop enterprise licenses, where applicable

Approach: In concert with the Information Technology Management Advisory Council (ITMAC),

  • Establish a schedule of IT Asset Management initiatives that offer the promise of significant cost savings and reduced administrative burden for USDA agencies and staff offices.
  • Prioritize the schedule of IT Asset Management initiatives to meet current and long term agency and staff office business needs.
  • Establish appropriate timeframes for completion of the IT Asset Management initiatives.
  • Communicate progress and status of the IT Asset Management initiatives to agencies and staff offices on a regular basis.
  • Identify key issues and concerns, and management decision points to ensure successful completion of the IT Asset Management initiatives.
