Indiana

clean-up at the USDA Columbia, Indiana service centerJune Floods Destroy Fields and Property
After three days of record breaking rainfall and flooding in Indiana, NRCS and other key State office staff visited the flooded-out Columbus USDA Service Center.  “It’s an incredible mess,” said Indiana NRCS State Conservationist Jane Hardisty.  "Mud is everywhere and we’ve lost equipment and supplies."

 


Massachusetts

Federal, State and local officials joined Cape Cod residents in celebrating the completion of a $1.5 million, multi-year project to restore a salt marsh and fish passage for migrating herring on Cape Cod.  After remarks by dignitaries and awards to project leaders, a ribbon was cut on a bridge over a new box culvert that will improve tidal exchange and enhance upstream saltmarsh ecosystem health in Sesuit Creek.


Nebraska

Nebraska NRCS district conservationist Dennis Schroder Watershed and Flood Control Structures Prevent Flooding in Nebraska County
(from KGIN-TV/KOLNKGIN.com) Nebraska NRCS district conservationist Dennis Schroder credits extensive watershed and flood control structures in Nebraska County with limiting the flooding there.  "These things are holding back and limiting the flow of millions of gallons of water," Schroder said.

Evan Sullivan cares deeply about the environment.  In August 2007, he put that commitment into practice by becoming an Earth Team volunteer with the NRCS in Amherst, Massachusetts.  The high school junior quickly became popular with the Massachusetts NRCS staff.  And his experience with the Earth Team solidified his resolve to pursue a career in environmental protection.

On April 14, 2008, Secretary Ed Schafer signed a proclamation making June 22 – 28, 2008, National Pollinator Week.  He called upon the people of the United States to join him in celebrating the vital significance of pollinators to agriculture and to public lands.  He also noted the Department's conservation assistance to farmers and ranchers and its management of ecosystems providing valuable pollinator habitats throughout the Nation.

NRCS This Week features a weekly historical photo and caption.  NHQ, districts, States, RC&D councils, and all other NRCS entities are invited to submit a historical photo of activities or individuals who have worked or are working for the agency along with a caption.
