Data in this file were produced by Science Applications Inc., prime contractor on the Bureau of Land Management/Outer Continental Shelf- Southern California studies (BLM/OCS). The data were received at NGDC via NODC on August 19, 1997. Documentation has been transcribed to the README file accompanying the data. No paper report exists. Additional data codes and documentation are in poor, extremely hard to read condition. Some parts of the documentation are available in the .pdf file referenced above.

The Centre National Pour l'Exploitation des Oceans (CNEXO) ferromanganese nodule analysis files consist of geochemical data from published reports pertaining to oceanic ferromanganese deposits, including Russian, since 1891. Data were compiled under the direction of J.M. Monget of Ecoles de Mines, Paris through 1976 and contain data for nearly 200 core, dredge, and grab samples. Data include method of analysis, oxide/item/element concentrations, location, water depth, sample lithology, and bibliographic references. The CNEXO data are also available as part of the NGDC marine minerals database and are offered on the NOAA & MMS Marine Minerals CD-ROM data set released by NGDC in October of 1992.

Buccaneer Oil Field Data Set

|
This data set contains analytical data from samples acquired from the Northwestern Gulf of Mexico area under contract to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) during 1978-1979. Individual contractors included researchers from Rice University, Moody College, and Texas A & M University. Most samples were taken from the R/V Gus III. The project was known as the "Buccaneer Oil Field" project.

CLIMAP 120K Data Set
|
|
The CLIMAP (Climate: Long-range Investigation, Mapping, and Prediction) Project was funded by the National Science Foundation as part of the International Decade of Ocean Exploration (IDOE). Collection and analysis of cores for the 120K bp CLIMAP set was carried out by several institutions; data were compiled by the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University. Data include micropaleontology, carbonate percentages, carbon 14 age dates, sea surface temperature estimates, and oxygen and carbon isotopic data for 52 ocean sediment cores. Data cover the period from 140,000 to 100,000 years before present and are global in extent.

CLIMAP 18K Data Set

This data set contains the data files of the CLIMAP project for 18,000 BP, including planktonic counts and core mineralogy. Raw data are contained in the file sed.dat, documentation is incorporated in this README file. Files ending in *.txt were derived by WDC-A for Paleoclimatology at NGDC. Related files including sea surface temperature estimates and surface conditions are available through the WDC-A for Paleoclimatology, including SST models.

Carbonate Data from LDEO and Brown University

LDEO Carbonate data were compiled under the direction of A. Esmay and W.F. Ruddiman at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University. Data include CaCO3 percentages by interval down core for 328 sediments cores, principally from the Atlantic ocean. Weight percentages of calcium carbonate in the Brown file were compiled by J. Farrell and W. L. Prell of Brown University for 17 equatorial Pacific Ocean sediment cores.

Chi-Chi, Taiwan Earthquake, September 21, 1999
|
|
At 1:47 AM local time, a magnitude MW 7.6 earthquake was felt throughout the island of Taiwan. A five county area, including the city of Taichung, experienced the greatest number of casualties and most severe damage. 2,405 deaths and 10,718 injuries were reported. As many as 82,000 housing units were damaged or destroyed, resulting in nearly 600,000 people being temporarily or permanently displaced from their homes.

Data were gathered by the R/V Marion Dufresne in May and June of 1992 over the Mascarene Ridge in the Indian Ocean on cruise MD72/MASCAFLUX. Heat flow measurements for 96 in-situ readings including both thermal conductivity and thermal gradient were recorded along two profiles perpendicular to the mascarene ridge.

Japan Oceanographic Data Center Sediment File
|
|
This file was compiled by the Japan Oceanographic Data Center using the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) Marine Geological Data Format in use at the time of its origin (see readme file). It includes 748 master records and 1740 data records. It contains information on unconsolidated sediments and hard rocks from the seafloor, including station location, collecting institution and ship, date of collection, type of collecting device, analysis method(s), grain size information, biogenous components, structure, non-biogenous components, age, sediment color, and remarks. Igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks are also noted including encrustations, and erratics.

Carbon-14 data in this file were compiled by W.F. Ruddiman and staff at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University. Data include 974 carbon-14 dates from 309 ocean sediments cores, covering the period from 40,000 years bp to the present worldwide. Estimated error range is given. Also included are core identifier, latitude/longitude, water depth, depth in core, institutional source, laboratory number, and sediment fraction analyzed (total, bulk, or fine fraction).

Data include foraminifer census counts and sea surface temperature estimates derived from marine sediment cores from the north Atlantic Ocean. Documentation for the faunal data is at the end of this README.faunal1 file. Documentation for the SST data is in file README.sst. The data set includes counts by Dr.'s Ruddiman, Kellogg, and Sancetta. The readme files contain complete documentation of the formats, counting methods, and SST transfer functions.

Landers and Big Bear, California Earthquakes, June 28, 1992

The magnitude 7.6 earthquake near Landers, California was closely followed by a magnitude 6.7 near Big Bear. The two quakes were separated by 3 hours in time, 17 miles in distance, and 7,000 feet in elevation. This set depicts the terrain differences, structural damage, liquefaction, faulting, and resultant landslides.

The NGDC grain size database contains particle size data for over 17,000 seafloor samples worldwide. The file was begun by NGDC in 1976 in response to a need by the Outer Continental Shelf Environmental Assessment Program (OCSEAP) for a detailed, digital file of textural analyses. Data are from OCSEAP studies, academic institutions, environmental baseline studies conducted under contract to the Bureau of Land Management for the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Program, and from laboratory reports generated by the US Navy.

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography compiled descriptions of sediment samples related to ferromanganese deposits, funded through the IDOE, as part of the SIO world sediment data bank. Nodule description data are for approximately 200 core, dredge, and grab samples worldwide. Data include lithology, percent CaCO3, constituents by grain size, organic material/fossils, ages, other features, and minerals.

SIO Southeast Asian Sediment Description (SEATAR) Data Set

The SEATAR files were compiled by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography with funds from IDOE/NSF, as part of the SIO world sediment data bank, under the direction of Jane Frazer and Mary Fisk. Date were abstracted from published sources through 1976 and include descriptions of over 8,000 core, dredge, and grab samples from the area 15 degrees south to 45 degrees north, 90 degrees to 150 degrees east.

The SPECMAP Archive No.1 was compiled by Brown University under the direction of A. Duffy and J. Imbrie with the assistance of A.C. Mix and A. Mcintyre, funded by the National Science Foundation. The SPECMAP Archive No.1 Contains climate times series of the past 400,000 years, and basic downcore and core-top data from which these time series were derived for 17 sediment cores from the Atlantic Ocean.

Solar-Geophysical Data is a monthly bulletin issued since 1955 in two parts that provides the scientific community with a variety of solar-terrestrial data. Solar- Geophysical Data is intended to keep researchers informed on a timely schedule of the major events on the sun and of their associated interplanetary, ionospheric, geomagnetic and cosmic ray effects. Tsunami inundation grids
|
|
NOAA's National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) is building high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) for select U.S. coastal regions. These combined bathymetric-topographic DEMs are used to support tsunami forecasting and modeling efforts at the NOAA Center for Tsunami Research, Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL). The DEMs are part of the tsunami forecast system SIFT (Short-term Inundation Forecasting for Tsunamis) currently being developed by PMEL for the NOAA Tsunami Warning Centers, and are used in the MOST (Method of Splitting Tsunami) model developed by PMEL to simulate tsunami generation, propagation, and inundation.

This data set contains analytical data from samples acquired from the Baltimore Canyon (Mid-Atlantic) area of the Outer Continental Shelf, U.S. east coast, by the U.S. Geological Survey, Office of Marine Geology, Woods Hole, Mass., 02543, during the first year of environmental assessment work funded by the Bureau of Land Management (1 July 1975 - 30 June 1976). The data set contains ten files.

The USGS Ferromanganese Crust data set was compiled by F.T. Manheim and C.M. Lane-Bostwick of the US Geological Survey, Woods Hole, MA. The data set consists of tables corresponding the USGS Open-File Report 89-020 Chemical Composition of Ferromanganese Crusts in the World Ocean: A Review and Comprehensive Database. Data include excerpts from the SIO nodule file, the NGDC marine minerals data base, Japanese sources, a PhD thesis, analyses performed at the Bureau of Mines, and analyses performed at other laboratories under the direction of the USGS. These data are also included on the NOAA & MMS Marine Minerals CD-ROM data set released by NGDC in October of 1992.

Lockridge, 1989) is a compilation of the historical records of tsunamis that have been observed or recorded in United States coastal waters, up through 1988. The publication includes discussions of events occurring on the shores of Hawaii, Alaska, the west and east coasts of the United States, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and American Samoa and other U.S. possessions in the Pacific. It also contains descriptive data about each reported tsunami event, and details the effects of the waves. Tables summarizing events and effects are included for each area. 265 pages of text, 66 illustrations, and 11 tables; available in hard-cover format.

The USGS/WHOI Continental Margin (CONMAR) Data set was compiled by the US Geological Survey and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution as a joint program of study of the Atlantic continental margin of the US. The CONMAR set contains information for 3,715 cores, dredges, and grab samples, and consists of 20 files of grain size analyses/statistical parameters, composition of clay, sand, gravel and carbonate fractions, organic contents, heavy mineral and x-ray analyses, radioactivity counts, and major chemical and trace-element analyses.

Univ. of Minnesota, Large Lakes Observatory Lake Victoria Cruise V95 Cores Biogenic Silica and Carbon 14 Age Dates

The Biogenic Silica Data file contains data for 5 cores taken from various sites in Lake Victoria. The data include ship, coring date, water depth, latitude/longitude, sampling device, sampled interval, % biogenic silica, and 14C dates. Cores were sampled at 10 cm intervals for biogenic silica analysis. Samples taken for 14C dating were prepared at the LRC Laboratory and sent to an outside AMS Facility for analysis. Pollen, charcoal, and plant macrofossils were dated.
