JPlotLayout Error

I am a new SGT user...and to get started, I created a small test program 
which involves the "addData" method of a PointCollection in JPlotLayout. 
 I received the following error:

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NullPointerException
    at gov.noaa.pmel.sgt.swing.JPlotLayout.addData(Unknown Source)


I also received this error when running Example1.java of the tutorial.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
