Data calculated by the Alcohol Epidemiologic Data System of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, February 2005.

Definition: Binge drinking is defined as the reported consumption of 5 or more drinks of alcoholic beverages on at least one occasion during the past month.

Blanks (–) in the table indicate that the states (including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico) did not participate or include the alcohol measure in the BRFSS for that year, or the data were excluded as inconsistent with data from the other states.

CI indicates 95-percent confidence interval.

Sources: National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Behavioral Risk Factors Surveillance System (BRFSS). CD-ROM 1984–1995 (Series 1, No.1, 2nd Edition), 1996–1997 (Series 1, No.2a, Series 1, No.3), 1998 (Series 1, No.4), 1999 (Series 1, No.5); 2000–2003 data from the CDC web site (http://www.cdc.gov/brfss/).

Notes:

All of the prevalence calculations have been processed consistently by state and year. For respondents who reported weekly drinking frequencies, their monthly consumption is calculated using the factor of 4.35 weeks per month. Missing values, refusal, and "don't know" are excluded from the prevalence calculations.

Prior to 1993, an introductory phrase about kinds of alcohol and when people drink was read before the questions on alcohol consumption were asked. In 1993, this introduction was discontinued.

Each state health department used random digit dialing to select samples of adults in households with telephones. The samples represented each state's civilian, non-institutionalized, adult population (persons 18 years of age or older). Most states used three-stage cluster sampling based on the Waksberg method, but some states used simple random, stratified random, or other sampling designs. See the published CDC Surveillance Summaries for information on survey design, sampling, and other measurement factors. A selected reference list is provided at the end of the notes.

Alcohol consumption data are not available in BRFSS for all states for the entire period covered in this table. The BRFSS participating states increased gradually from 15 in 1984 to all states plus the District of Columbia in 1994. However, beginning in 1994 alcohol consumption section rotated between core questionnaire (in odd-numbered years) and optional modules (in even-numbered years). As a result, all states administered alcohol questions in the odd-numbered years, while about a dozen of states also chose to do so in the even-numbered years.

During 1984 to 1988, beverage-specific questions were used in the BRFSS to measure alcohol consumption. Consumption from beverage-specific measures result in higher estimates of alcohol consumption. Comparisons of post-1988 surveys with data from these earlier years are not recommended.
