Further Information in Response to Inquiries on the Education Component Within the Comprehensive Center Applications (P60)

NIAAA Center Program Staff have received a number of inquiries asking for further information on projects that might be included in an application for a Comprehensive Research Center (P60). This posting provides examples of potential projects and is not intended to limit the subject range of potential translational research, or education projects. It is anticipated that P60 awardees will each have two or more translational research or scientific education projects. These projects shall in a meaningful way reflect the Center’s program of research.

Examples follow:

Translational Research:

The development of collaborative partnerships to advance the alcohol research field by the translation of insights and findings from basic and pre-clinical research to test hypotheses regarding treatment and prevention of alcohol-related disorders; or to improve interventions with alcohol affected individuals, in clinical practices, health care or community settings.

The development of innovative interventions to study the effects of services for diverse types of people in disparate social, cultural and environmental contexts.

For each of the above, insights gained from health care, patient or community settings might then inform hypotheses to strengthen basic and clinical studies within the Center, or elsewhere.

Dissemination of Scientific information and Research Progress:

Dissemination of scientific knowledge through educational efforts directed to the public, patient populations, professionals, and para-professionals; providing information to educational institutions, the media or other appropriate organizations/groups; and educational programs for specific audiences, e.g., children, women, etc.

Dissemination of scientific knowledge through the establishment of research and research training collaborations for the purpose of expanding the capacity of another institution, including minority institutions, in developing rigorous alcohol research programs.

Consistent with the RFA, all translational and educational projects should have specific objectives and include a method of assuring the effectiveness of the effort.
