This is an artist rendering of NASA's Quick Scatterometer (QuikScat) satellite set for launch in November 1998. The large, dish-like feature at the bottom of the satellite is the scatterometer instrument that will measure winds over the ocean surface. The instrument will collect data over ocean, land, and ice in a continuous, 1,800-kilometer-wide band, making approximately 400,000 measurements per day.
