U.S. Nuclear Generation of Electricity |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
May 2008: Generation Rises in May, But Behind 2007 Pace: Nuclear output rose 13 percent in May 2008 compared with the preceding month. Even with the increase, generation was slightly below May 2007 (less than half a percent difference). Cumulative generation for the first five months of 2008 is slightly over one percent lower than in the record year of 2007. Generation is reported by State and by Reactor. Data Prior to Current Year 2007 Capacity and Generation: Record Nuclear Generation. Monthly and cumulative data are reported by State and by Reactor. 2006 Capacity and Generation: Final EIA Data shows slight capacity increase. Monthly and cumulative data are reported by State and Reactor. 2005 Capacity and Generation: Final EIA data confirms generation declined. Monthly and cumulative data are reported by State and by Reactor 2004 Capacity and Generation: Final EIA data shows record output. Monthly and cumulative data are reported by State and by Reactor. 2003 Capacity and Generation: Final EIA data confirm another record year. Monthly and cumulative data are reported by State and by Reactor. U.S. Capacity and Generation: Annual 1957 to Latest Available EIA Final Data Information is provided in table 9.2, Annual Energy Review.
Daily Data is available from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission on the operational status and downtime of each nuclear generating unit. Sundry information on a variety of topics (such as nuclear markets, security, employment) is available on the Nuclear Energy Institute’s web site at http://www.nei.org. Timely articles on all aspects of the U.S. Nuclear industry can be found at One Nuclear Place and on the Topix web site.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is the principal Agency charged with oversight of the Nation’s commercial nuclear industry. NRC’s responsibilities and authority also extend to licensing of certain non-commercial reactors, such as those used in educational programs. The Department of Energy (DOE) operates nuclear facilities, including National nuclear laboratories. Within the Department of Energy, the Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management (OCRWM) has responsibility for oversight of waste storage, ensuring that waste is properly stored and monitored and does not come into contact with ground water. The responsibilities of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission are varied, ranging from regulation of oil pipelines to licensing of hydroelectric projects. Possibly of most interest to nuclear data users is the data that the Commission collects in support of its responsibilities related to the electric utility industry.
