Major Areas of Investigation

Clinical Pharmacology: Pharmacokinetics of beta-adrenergic blockers; biotransformation and pharmacokinetics of dichloroacetate.

Endocrinology and Metabolism: Diagnosis, prevention and treatment of insulin-dependent diabetes and other autoimmune diseases; course and treatment of congenital lactic acidosis.

Environmental Health: Biotransformation and toxicology of chlorinated hydrocarbons.

Exercise Physiology: Modulation of cardiac risk factors by graded exercise; exercise-induced changes in homocysteine metabolism and insulin resistance; exercise endurance in mitochondrial diseases.

Gastroenterology: Isotopic breath tests for diagnosis of intestinal bacterial overgrowth and malabsorption; new drug therapy for pancreatitis and hepatitis C.

Gene Therapy: Administration of adeno-associated viral vectors for congenital diseases.

Neonatology: Maternal-fetal HIV transmission; prevention of nosocomial infections in preterm neonates; placental transport and metabolism; biology of cytokine receptors; GCSF therapy in neonates; identification and functional significance of erythropoietin receptors in the fetus; glutamine synthetase and glutaminase activities in premature infants.

Nursing: Coping effectiveness of parents whose children have inborn errors of metabolism.

Nutrition: Folate and pyridoxine nutritional status in women; nutritional regulation of one-carbon metabolism; gene polymorphisms affecting homocysteine metabolism.

Pulmonary Diseases: Treatment of cystic fibrosis; alpha-1 antritypsin deficiency and asthma.

Rheumatology: Pathobiology of systemic lupus erythematosus; treatment of fibromyalgia.
