Bone marker immunoassays: Free deoxypyridinoline crosslinks, crosslinked C-telopeptide, and N-telopeptide of type I collagen, osteocalcin, bone-specific alkaline phosphatase, N-terminal propeptide of type I collagen Hormones, growth factors, cytokines Molecular biology: RNA and DNA extraction from tissue and blood; quantitative PCR; microarrays; quantitative reverse-transcriptase PCR

Major Areas of Investigation

Cardiology: Atrial fibrillation; hypertension; congestive heart failure.

Endocrinology: Oncogenes of adrenal and thyroid tumors; effect of sex hormones on calcium and bone turnover in older women and men; bone loss and its treatment in men with prostate cancer.

Gastrointestinal Diseases: Acute intermittent porphyria; hepatitis C.

Genetic Diseases: Primary cortisol resistance; genetic abnormalities in glaucoma; osteoporosis; osteogenesis imperfecta; lysosomal storage disorders.

Infectious Diseases: Lyme and other tick-borne diseases; AIDS; influenza.

Obstetrics and Gynecology: Smoking cessation and pregnant women.

Oncology: National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project prevention and treatment trials; treatment of chronic myelogenous leukemia, breast cancer, cervical disease with heat shock protein immunotherapy.

Pediatrics: AIDS, Children's Cancer Group protocols; tick-borne diseases; Crohn's disease and bone, asthma.

Psychiatry: Etiology and pathophysiology of alcohol, cocaine, and opioid dependence, including neuroendocrinologic, neuropsychological, and molecular genetic studies; pharmacological treatment of alcohol dependence; physiological measures of risk and molecular genetic studies of schizophrenia; psychotherapy of alcohol and drug dependence and pathological gambling.

Rheumatology: Sjogren's syndrome; scleroderma.
