Lab Announces Selection of Partner for Venture Acceleration Initiative
September 2 — The Laboratory and its operating contractor, Los Alamos National Security, LLC, plan to partner with ARCH Venture Partners and Verge Fund for the Los Alamos Venture Acceleration (LAVA) Initiative.

Builders Place Final Beam in First Phase of CMRR Project
July 22 — Workers hoisted the final steel beam atop the skeleton of what will be the Radiological Laboratory Utility Office Building at the Laboratory Tuesday morning, marking a milestone for the first of three phases in the multiyear Chemistry and Metallurgy Research Replacement Project (CMRR).

Lab hosts 12th annual HAZMAT Challenge
July 14 — Fourteen teams are scheduled to participate in the 12th annual HAZMAT Challenge taking place July 15 – 18 at the Laboratory’s HAZMAT Training Facility at Technical Area 49.

July 8 — Los Alamos National Security, LLC recently entered into mentor-protégé agreements with two Northern New Mexico businesses, North Wind, Inc. and Performance Maintenance Inc. (PMI), under the auspices of a Department of Energy mentor-protégé program.

Supercomputing Challenge April 21-22

October 16 — Nearly a million cancer patients will undergo radiation therapy this year in the United States, and now a new software application, Acuros®, based on the Los Alamos National Laboratory-developed Attila® radiation-modeling software, will enable physicians to focus their beams more precisely on specific tumor sites.

July 31 — Los Alamos National Security, LLC will enter into a first-ever mentor-protégé agreement with TSAY Construction and Services, LLC, a small business 100 percent owned and operated by Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo (formerly San Juan Pueblo) located just north of Los Alamos.

Laboratory subcontractors contribute to economic development fund

Los Alamos scientist to speak on gamma ray bursts
September 2 — A few times a day a special type of massive star transforms itself into a black hole, simultaneously collapsing and ejecting material in a jet that moves very close to the speed of light. During their fleeting existence, these jets flood much of the universe with an enormous burst of gamma rays.

Sealed sources leave the Hill, destined for WIPP
August 17 — In the first shipment since May 2003, fourteen 55-gallon drums of radioactive sealed sources were shipped from storage at Los Alamos National Laboratory to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) on Thursday, July 28.

June 6 — Stephani Sandoval, a forest health specialist with the New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension Services, will talk about the condition of area forests, bark beetles and other forest-related topics at a talk at noon, Thursday (June 9) in the Laboratory's Bradbury Science Museum downtown.

UC San Diego and Los Alamos National Laboratory establish engineering institute
May 18 — The University of California, San Diego and Los Alamos National Laboratory have forged a partnership for education, research and technology advancement that builds on a research-focused education initiative with the UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering.

Laboratory employees again are top contributors to Santa Fe County 2004 United Way campaign
May 13 — Los Alamos National Laboratory employees for the fifth consecutive year are the largest contributors to the United Way of Santa Fe County's annual giving campaign. Laboratory employees pledged or donated $113,242 to the United Way of Santa Fe County's 2004 giving campaign.

SERF's up
May 3 — A new facility that will save nearly 21 million gallons of water a year-the equivalent of about 100 households- became fully operational today. The Sanitary Effluent Reclamation Facility (SERF) will be used to further treat sanitary effluent from the Laboratory's domestic wastewater treatment facility.

New parking garage opens
May 2 — For employees wishing for the "good old days" when parking was plentiful, those days are returning, and will be even better than before. Today, a new $5.6 million parking structure on the corner of West Jemez Road and Casa Grande Drive opened for employee and visitor parking - 11 months ahead of schedule.

Los Alamos Employees' Scholarship Fund awards scholarships
April 6 — Santa Fe High School senior Taryn Flock is the recipient of the four-year, $10,000-a-year platinum scholarship from the Los Alamos Employees' Scholarship Fund. The fund is administered through the Los Alamos National Laboratory Foundation.

Northern New Mexico girls learn about math, science through Expanding Your Horizons program
March 18 — An estimated 200 teenage girls from around Northern and Central New Mexico will discover the wonderment of math and science as participants in the national Expanding Your Horizons program Thursday, March 31, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church Parish Hall in Los Alamos.

Bradbury Science Museum celebrates Women's History Month with talks, exhibit
March 4 — Los Alamos National Laboratory's Bradbury Science Museum is celebrating Women's History Month with a talk Tuesday (March 8) by a Manhattan Project chemist and a new traveling exhibit. Other activities in March are planned as well.

Lab to host catalog-contracts pre-solicitation conference
February 28 — Los Alamos National Laboratory's Supply Chain Management Division will host a conference on Thursday to provide information about how regional businesses and suppliers can respond to requests for proposals for Just-in-Time catalog subcontracts with the Laboratory.

Los Alamos scientist named Asian American Engineer of the Year
February 24 — A University of California scientist working at Los Alamos National Laboratory widely known for his innovations in the field of electronic materials and high-temperature superconductivity has been named the 2005 Asian American Engineer of the Year by the Chinese Institute of Engineers USA (CIE/USA).

Los Alamos muon detector could thwart nuclear smugglers
February 19 — Trillions of cosmic rays that constantly bombard Earth could help catch smugglers trying to bring nuclear weapons or materials into the United States.

Wojciech H. Zurek named Phi Beta Kappa visiting scholar
February 16 — Physicist Wojciech H. Zurek of Los Alamos National Laboratory's Theoretical Division was named a Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar for 2004-05. Established in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa is the nation's oldest and largest academic honor society. Its Visiting Scholar Program serves to enrich the intellectual atmosphere at participating institutions.

Four Los Alamos physicists honored by American Physical Society
February 15 — The American Physical Society has honored four Los Alamos National Laboratory physicists for their outstanding contributions to physics, naming them fellows of the society. Steve Elliot, David Montgomery, David Moore and John Singleton were among 201 scientists nationwide elected as American Physical Society fellows in 2004.

Los Alamos National Laboratory organizations earn seven out of 13 NNSA Pollution Prevention Awards

Laboratory announces organizational changes
October 12 — As part of efforts to strengthen laboratory operations and the senior management team, Los Alamos National Laboratory Director George P. Nanos today announced a reorganization of his senior management team and the Laboratory's Operations Directorate. Effective October 13, 2004, the Operations Directorate will be split into two directorates that will provide enhanced services and functions to the Laboratory.

Purchase card use triggers personnel actions, Lab review
August 20 — Los Alamos National Laboratory on Monday placed a Laboratory employee and a contractor employee on investigative leave in connection with apparent irregularities in the use of Laboratory-issued purchase cards. The two individuals are holders of the cards associated with these apparent irregularities.

Nanos directs swift action, demands accountability in new classified media incident
July 9 — During a July 7 special inventory associated with an upcoming experiment, two items of Classified Removable Electronic Media (CREM) were discovered missing from the Weapons Physics (WP) Directorate. An immediate search did not locate the items. A subsequent and extensive search is currently continuing.

Laboratory sponsored Math and Science Academy a success
July 8 — The quality of education in Northern New Mexico has been improved because of the Northern New Mexico Math and Science Academy (MSA), according to a study by evaluators from the National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards and Student Testing at the University of California at Los Angeles. The MSA is a Laboratory collaboration with the Northern New Mexico Council for Excellence in Education (NMCEE).

Laboratory Captures Five R&D 100 Awards
July 6 — Scientists at the University of California's Los Alamos National Laboratory have captured five of R&D Magazine's 2004 R&D 100 Awards. The latest winners bring the Laboratory's total to 83 awards over the past 17 years. The projects recognized this year span a diverse range of scientific and technical areas - from innovative imaging techniques and advances in computing to revolutionary new materials. This year, Los Alamos was tied with its sister laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, for the largest number of awards received by a Department of Energy laboratory.

Laboratory receives preliminary notice of violation
June 25 — Los Alamos National Laboratory has received a Preliminary Notice of Violation (PNOV) for a safety-related incident that occurred last summer.

May 20 — Los Alamos National Laboratory officials today announced changes to the Northern New Mexico portion of the Neighborhood Environmental Watch Network, or NEWNET.

Lab receives Pollution Prevention awards
April 15 — Ambassador Linton Brooks, National Nuclear Security Administration administrator, presented 2004 NNSA Pollution Prevention Best-in-Class awards to two projects at Los Alamos National Laboratory on Thursday. The projects selected for recognition include revamping heavy equipment shop operations to eliminate persistent waste streams and the elimination of a hazardous chemical in the process to determine the nucleotide sequence of DNA.

Nanos statement regarding settlement of NMED Order
March 19 — Resolution of the jurisdictional and legal disputes associated with the original order is very welcome news. We look forward to strengthening our relationship with the New Mexico Environment Department, and to continuing the productive discussions I have had with Secretary Curry. We are eager to resume expedited clean-up of legacy wastes throughout the laboratory site just as soon as the impounded funds are released.

Lab upgrades to Security Condition two
December 22 — Consistent with national terrorist threat level orange, announced over the weekend by the Bush administration, the National Nuclear Security Administration has directed Los Alamos National Laboratory to upgrade to Security Condition (SECON) two. The Laboratory last upgraded to SECON 2 in May.

Annual inventory discovers classified media discrepancies
December 9 — A routine inventory of classified computer media at Los Alamos National Laboratory's new Nonproliferation and International Security Center has identified inventory discrepancies involving missing electronic storage devices. While the Laboratory expects the federal government to perform an independent analysis of this situation, initial Laboratory review indicates that national security was not jeopardized by this incident.

November 3 — Continuing its all-star annual series of robot-building workshops, scientists from Los Alamos National Laboratory will bring the cold, hard, hand of science to bear in the classroom this week. Armed with a box of robot kits and a cumulative 100-plus years of professional experience, Los Alamos scientists will do a show-and-tell that should turn some heads at Jemez Valley Elementary School, Jemez Valley Middle School, San Diego Riverside School, Walatowa High and Jemez Valley High School.

Los Alamos discloses improper PCB disposal
October 15 — Los Alamos National Laboratory officials today disclosed improper disposal of approximately one quart of liquid, low-level radioactive polychlorinated biphenyl oil that had been solidified through absorption and then disposed of at Area G within Technical Area 54 on Sept. 10, 2003. Area G is a low-level PCB contamination disposal facility; however, the oil was solidified contrary to Environmental Protection Agency regulations. Laboratory officials notified Region 6 EPA officials of the improper disposal on Oct. 10.

Edmonds addresses economic implications of climate change
September 23 — Experts believe that addressing global climate change is likely to involve a revolutionary transformation of the global energy system. In a seminar sponsored by Los Alamos National Laboratory's Energy and Environment Council and College of Santa Fe, economist and climate change expert Jae Edmonds will discuss some of the most promising technological solutions for climate change and the economic implications of applying environmentally-friendly energy technologies.

2003 Hazmat Challenge features Chem/Bio weapons response
August 18 — The largest field of contestants, including for the first time teams from outside New Mexico, and an action-packed schedule of events highlight the 2003 New Mexico State Hazmat Challenge, Aug. 19 through 22 at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

DOE-LASO, Los Alamos National Laboratory and Los Alamos County reach agreement on traffic control enforcement
July 16 — The Los Alamos National Laboratory, the U.S. Department of Energy's Los Alamos Site Office, and the County of Los Alamos have reached an agreement that allows county police officers to resume enforcement of state and local traffic laws on NNSA owned roadways in and around the Laboratory. The Memorandum of Agreement was ratified by the Los Alamos County Council last evening.

Laboratory discovers material accounting discrepancy
June 18 — During a routine materials transfer at Los Alamos National Laboratory a discrepancy was identified in the systems used to catalog materials, leading to the Laboratory's inability to fully account for two low-purity analytical samples of plutonium-oxide. The total amount of nuclear material involved is very small, but due to security requirements the specific quantity cannot be disclosed.

New fire danger requires new emergency response
May 16 — Due to unique forest conditions, this fire season has Los Alamos County, Los Alamos Schools and Laboratory emergency managers recommending that evacuation as a protective action during wildfire may not be the way to go. Instead, they are advocating "shelter-in-place" as a way to safely ride out this year's potential fires, which are anticipated to be small, hot and fast.

Amended complaint filed by the Regents of the University of California
September 30 — Los Alamos National Laboratory officials announced today that an amended complaint has been filed by The Regents of the University of California challenging the finding of endangerment signed by New Mexico Environment Department Secretary Peter Maggiore on May 2, 2002 as well as additional regulatory actions taken by the Department that are based on that finding, its accompanying draft order or associated legal principles.

July 31 — Officials at the U.S. Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory today filed the laboratory's response to a draft order issued May 2 by the New Mexico Environment Department.

Protective appeals filed by the Regents of the University of California
June 3 — Los Alamos National Laboratory today announced that protective appeals have been filed by The Regents of the University of California regarding the "Determination Of An Imminent And Substantial Endangerment To Health And The Environment" signed by New Mexico Environment Department Secretary Peter Maggiore on May 2, 2002. The protective appeals were filed with the federal district court as well as with the New Mexico Court of Appeals, both in Santa Fe. The U. S. Attorney for New Mexico, on behalf of the Department of Energy, filed a similar appeal with the New Mexico Court of Appeals.

Laboratory issues statement on State Environment Department order for corrective action
May 1 — The Los Alamos National Laboratory today received a fact sheet associated with expected issuance of a draft order from the New Mexico Environment Department pursuant to the New Mexico Hazardous Waste Act. According to this fact sheet, the Department is asserting that past or present operations at the Laboratory"may result in an imminent and substantial endangerment to human health and the environment.

Laboratory scientist receives prestigious nuclear physics award
January 3 — Los Alamos National Laboratory scientist, J. David Bowman has been awarded the Tom W. Bonner Prize in nuclear physics. Granted annually by the American Physical Society, the Bonner Prize is the top American nuclear physics award. This is the second time that a Los Alamos scientist has received this honor.

Lab cancels planned biodetector tests
July 8 — Planned tests involving the outdoor release of a common bacterium have been cancelled due to ongoing public concerns, Los Alamos National Laboratory officials announced today. The tests are part of a program to develop better devices for prompt, accurate detection of biological agents that could be used in terrorist or battlefield attacks. Scientists will look for alternate sites to conduct airborne releases of bacteria as part of the detector development.

April 21 — Los Alamos National Laboratory Interim Director George P. (Pete) Nanos today expressed disagreement with findings contained in a report issued by the Department of Energy's Inspector General addressing unallowable costs. Laboratory subcontractors contribute to economic development fund
