RISE is a student development program for minority-serving institutions. The goal of the program is to increase the number of students from groups underrepresented in biomedical and behavioral research who complete Ph.D. degree programs in these fields. The program supports institutional grants with well integrated developmental activities that may include, but are not limited to, research experiences at on- or off-campus laboratories, specialty courses with a focus on critical thinking and development of research skills, collaborative learning experiences, research careers seminars, scientific reading comprehension and writing skills, tutoring for excellence, and travel to scientific meetings. Support is also available for evaluation activities.
Applications may be submitted by domestic post-secondary minority-serving institutions that have more than 50 percent student enrollment from groups underrepresented in biomedical or behavioral research. The applicant institution must award the baccalaureate, master’s, or doctoral degree in biomedical or behavioral science fields. For the latest on eligibility requirements, see NOT-GM-07-104.
An institution may apply for and hold only one RISE grant and may not be currently receiving support from the MBRS Initiative for Maximizing Student Diversity Program. The total requested project period for these awards may not exceed 4 years. Effective with the May 15, 2007, application receipt date, NIGMS revised the maximum budget that can be requested in the RISE applications. For more information, see NOT-GM-07-101. Awards are renewable.
While there are no budgetary caps for this award, all requested costs must be reasonable, well documented, and fully justified and commensurate with the scope of the proposed program. An institution may apply for and hold only one RISE grant, and may not be currently receiving support from the MBRS Initiative for Maximizing Student Diversity (IMSD) Program. The total requested project period for these awards may not exceed 4 years. Awards are renewable. Applicants should also note the NIH policy (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-02-004.html) on $500,000 or more in direct costs for any year, and must carry out the following steps:
- Contact the IC program staff at least 6 weeks before submitting the application, i.e., as you are developing plans for the study;
- obtain agreement from the IC staff that the IC will accept your application for consideration for award; and,
- include a cover letter with the application that identifies the staff member and IC who agreed to accept assignment of the application.
